SOUTH BEND - Robert D. Sweitzer, 78, of East Colfax Avenue, died at 10:50 a.m. Sunday in St. Joseph's Medical Center after an illness. Mr. Sweitzer retired in 1991 from Bath Agency after 42 years of service in the insurance industry. He was born Oct. 10, 1916, in Carlisle, Neb., and lived in South Bend for 53 years.

 

On June 21, 1958, in South Bend, he married Eleanor Banks Lyons. She survives with a daughter, Judith Lyons Smith of Osceola; a son, Robert J. Lyons Jr. of East Greenwich, R.I.; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

 

He was a trustee and elder of the First Presbyterian Church; former member of the Rotary Club; past president and director of the former Indiana Club; member of board of directors of the Scholarship Foundation of St. Joseph County and LaSalle Park Homes; served on the Mayor's Housing Forum; was a United Way committee member; a charter member of Men's Annual Community Prayer Breakfast and Notre Dame University Club. He was a veteran of World War II.

 

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in McGann Funeral Home, 2313 E. Edison Road. Memorial contributions may be made to the church, Scholarship Foundation of St. Joseph County or Hospice of St. Joseph County Inc.

SOUTH BEND - Memorial services for Robert D. Sweitzer, 78, of East Colfax Avenue, who died at 10:50 a.m. Sunday in St. Joseph's Medical Center after an illness, will be at 2 p.m. Friday in First Presbyterian Church. Private entombment will be in Riverview Mausoleum.
