Alice Jane Tarnow

March 9, 1917 - May 12, 1999

Alice Jane Tarnow, co-founder of Martin's Super Markets, died on Wednesday, May 12. She was born in South Bend, Ind., on March 9, 1917. God rest her soul. Jane graduated from Central High School in 1935.

 

As Jane Cary, she married Martin Tarnow in South Bend on March 21, 1936. In September of 1947, Martin and Jane opened a neighborhood ''mom and pop'' grocery store at 1521 Portage Avenue in South Bend. Working together they built the nucleus of Martin's Super Markets, which today consists of 17 stores and 2500 employees. Jane enjoyed her time working at the store immensely. Jane was a devoted mother to her daughters, Nancy and Sue. She was an excellent artist, very interested in wildlife conservation, and enjoyed the company of others.

 

She will be missed by her daughter, Nancy (Bob) Bartels and their children, Amy (Jim) Stoll and Rob (Ann) Bartels; her daughter, Suellen Leslie and her children, Mark Jones, Randy (Stacey) Jones; and her great-grandchildren, Andy, Billy, and Bobby Bartels, Ryan Jones and James Stoll, Jr.

 

Private family services have been held. Cremation will take place at Michiana Crematory. Memorial contributions may be made to The Nature Conservancy, International Headquarters, 1815 North Lynn Street, Arlington, VA 22209, (703) 841-5300. Welsheimer Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
