SOUTH BEND -- Elizabeth M. "Betty" Tarr, 90, of West Washington Street, South Bend, Ind., passed away at 2 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 24, in the Saint  Joseph Care Center West after an extended illness.  Mrs. Tarr was born on Aug. 27, 1912, in South Bend, and was a lifetime resident of South Bend.

 

On Sept. 2, 1939, in South Bend, as Elizabeth Mary Szucs, she married Joseph E. Tarr, who preceded her in death on Aug. 30, 1984.

 

Mrs. Tarr was a homemaker and a member of Our Lady of Hungary Roman Catholic Church.

 

Betty is survived by a daughter, Judy R. (Frank) Mattei of Osceola, Ind.; and a son, Alexander P. Tarr of Scottsdale, Ariz.; two grandchildren, Deb (Kevin) Kolber and Russ (Tisha) Mattei, both of South Bend; three great-grandchildren, Nicholas Kolber, Kory Kolber and Ashleigh Mattei. Also surviving are two  sisters, Mary Blankert and Theresa Kosik, both of South Bend. Several nieces

and nephews also survive.

 

Mrs. Tarr was preceded in death by her loving husband, Joseph; a sister, Helen Nagy; and by five brothers, Geza Szucs, Alex Szucs, Dale Szucs, Julius Szucs, and Steve Szucs.

 

Betty was a warm, caring and loving wife, mother and grandmother. She always placed her family first. She loved and cherished her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was an avid baker who loved to cook and entertain her family.

 

She will be sadly missed by her loving family and all who knew her.

 

Visitation hours will be from 4 to 8 pm. Tuesday, Aug. 26, in Hanley & Sons "Southwest Chapel" Funeral Home, located at West Ireland Road/ Indiana 23, South Bend, where a rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be said at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27, in Our Lady of Hungary Roman Catholic Church, with Rev. Thaddeus Kwak officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery, South Bend.

 

The family requests that all memorial contributions be made to St. Joseph County  Heart Association, 711 E. Colfax Ave., South Bend, IN 46617 or to the Ronald McDonald House, c/o Memorial Hospital, 615 N. Michigan St., South Bend IN 46601.
