Mildred S. Towne

Sept. 25, 1901 - Feb. 24, 2000

Mildred S. Towne, 98, of East Bronson Street in South Bend, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 24, in her home. She was born in Sterling, Ill., on Sept. 25, 1901 to Henry and Anna (Sharp) Snavely. On June 27, 1931, in Chicago, Ill., she married Lawrence C. Towne. They moved to South Bend in 1932.

As a young woman, Mildred was a teacher in a one-room school house in Sterling, Ill. She then moved to Chicago, where she was employed by the Internal Revenue Service. She retired from the St. Joseph County Welfare Department in 1971, after 10 years of employment.

Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her son, Lawrence C. Jr., and an infant daughter. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Helen Teach and Dorothy Bahr; and by a brother, Ralph Snavely.

She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Marcia Cole Towne of South Bend; a granddaughter, Elizabeth Towne (Christopher) Murphy of Upton, Mass.; a grandson, Lawrence C. (Veronnica) Towne, Ill.; and by three great-grandchildren, Samantha and Ian Murphy of Upton, and Lawrence C. Towne, IV of South Bend.

Mildred was a member of Sunnyside Presbyterian Church, Schuyler Colfax Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and South Bend Chapter 2 of the Eastern Star.

Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday in the Welsheimer Funeral Home, 521 North Williams Street in South Bend. Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday in the funeral home, with burial to follow in Highland Cemetery.
