SOUTH BEND - Gustave R. "Gus" VanAcker Jr., 66, residing in South Bend, IN, passed away at 11:12 p.m. Saturday, August 22, 2009, in Hospice House, South Bend. He was born March 8, 1943, in South Bend, to Gustave and Mary VanAcker, and had remained a lifelong resident of this community. He served his country proudly in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He was a member of American Legion Post 284. Gus worked at Wheelhorse as a spot welder, enjoyed NASCAR racing and spending time at the South Bend Motor Speedway. He is survived by his daughter, Nicole VanAcker of South Bend; two sisters, Renee Doering of Granger and Rose Mirda of California; and a brother, Chuck VanAcker of South Bend. He was preceded in death by his sister, Marty Inman. No services or visitation is planned. Cremation will take place at Southlawn Cremation Services. The Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 South Michigan Street, is assisting the family with arrangements.
