Bernard J. VanDaele

MISHAWAKA - Bernard J. VanDaele, 81, who lived with his daughter, Mrs. Frances Kedik, 56225 Cedar Road, died there at 1:45 a.m. Sunday after an illness of five weeks. HE was born on June 13, 1895 in Brussels, Belgium and had lived in Mishawaka for 63 years since coming from Belgium.

 

On July 2, 1924 in Mishawaka he married Lena VanDriessche. She died on Feb. 8, 1971. He was a 1965 retiree of Wheelabrator-Frye Corp., and had worked at St. Bavo’s Church for several years as a custodian. Surviving are his five daughters, Mrs. Kedik, Mrs. Florence Kline of San Rafael, Calif., Mrs. Virginia Wagner of Mishawaka and Mrs. Louise Whitfield and Mrs. Barbara Elli, both of South Bend; a son Richard of Nashville, Tenn.; 30 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and three sisters in Belgium.

 

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in the Queen of Peace Catholic Church. Rev. Bernard Palka will officiate and burial will be in Fairview Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in the DeVos Funeral Chapel where the rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. He was a veteran of World War I, a member of Mishawaka Post 360 Veterans of Foreign Wars, and active in Catholic Order of Foresters.
