Aug. 30,1935 - July 20, 2006

South Bend Tribune 7/26/2006

Phyllis (Tolchin) VanDerbeck, 70, was born August 30, 1935, and raised in South Bend, Ind. She graduated from Riley High School and attended Indiana and Purdue Universities. Phyllis was a lifetime resident of South Bend, Indiana, and Clearwater Beach, Florida.

At 70 she was still hard at work as a full-time employee after 52 years with the same company. Starting when she was 19 years old with Bendix as a secretary, she moved into human resources management with Allied Signal, and most recently was manager of aerospace organizational development and learning for Honeywell International where she wrote professional development grants and worked with government officials across the U.S. and internationally. She loved traveling extensively both for business and pleasure, entertaining family and friends, and walking the beach with her grandchildren.

Beloved mother of two daughters, Susan Honick of Elkhart, IN, and Jennifer Stutsman of Edwardsburg, MI. She is also survived by their husbands, Patrick and Michael, and five loving grandchildren, KatiLynn 20, Staci 17, Scott 14, Benjamin 5, and Daniel 4, and many cherished friends in the Michiana area as well as in Clearwater, Florida, and around the world.

Phyllis passed peacefully at home on Thursday, July 20, 2006, in Florida from natural causes following open-heart surgery in early May. Our hearts are saddened by the loss of such an extraordinary, vibrant woman. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

In lieu of flowers, Phyllis wished for those remembering her to take a walk on a beautiful day or to make a contribution in her memory to Clearwater Marine Aquarium, 249 Windward Passage, Clearwater, FL 33756.
