Joseph W. Vanderheyden, 66, of South Bend, Ind., passed away suddenly in his home on Monday, Sept. 13. He was born Sept. 17, 1937, in South Bend, the son of the late Joseph A. and Hattie (Kline) Vanderheyden. Joe grew up in South Bend where he played sports during his years attending Adams High School. He graduated from Adams in 1955 and attended Indiana University. In 1961 Joe moved to Goshen, Ind., where he resided until returning to South Bend in 1975. He worked in sales, and in recent years was employed at Joers Floor Center in Mishawaka, Ind. Joe was a member of St. Monica Catholic Church in Mishawaka, and was past exalted ruler of the Goshen Elks. He enjoyed golfing and played on leagues over the years. Joe loved college football and was an avid Notre Dame fan. He also was a Cubs baseball fan. Joe is remembered as a kind, loving man with many friends.

 

His surviving family includes his daughters, Beth Ann Vanderheyden of Miami, Fla., and Angela Brun (James) of Rockford, Ill.; his granddaughters, who brought him great joy, Julia Nichole and Lauren Gabrielle Brun; and a special cousin, Virginia Nix (Charles) of South Bend.

 

Friends may spend time with Joe's family from 5 to 8 p.m. today in the Thallemer, Goethals & Wells Funeral Home, 503 W. Third St., Mishawaka, where a prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in St. Monica Catholic Church, 222 West Mishawaka Ave., with Rev. Jeffery Largent officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in Mishawaka.
