Charles Vandermark Sr.

Charles Vandermark Sr., 89, of East Chippewa in South Bend, passed away in his residence on March 12. Charles was born Dec. 14, 1915, to Hillis and Della (Julian) Vandermark in Akron, Ind.

 

In Michigan City, on Oct. 19, 1946, he married Phyllis Rupp. He was preceded in death by his wife on Feb. 7, 1998 and by his granddaughter Carrie Sheldon. Charles is survived by his sons Charles (Betty) Vandermark Jr., of North Carolina, James (Linda) Vandermark of California, daughters Nancy Vandermark of Mishawaka, Lenora Warren of Mishawaka, one sister, Lavona "Tutti" Buchanon of Michigan City, Ind., 13 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren.

 

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 15, in Chapel Hill Funeral Home, funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 16, in the funeral home. Internment will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Osceola, Ind.

 

Charles was retired from Bendix. Charles was a World War II veteran, serving thirty months overseas from Africa to Germany. He received his Honorable Discharge in 1945 and also a Silver Star for being in Five Theaters of Operations. He lived most of his life in South Bend, and was formerly from Michigan City. When he moved to South Bend, it was to seek employment. He worked at Bendix as a Chief Shipper for 32 years and 8 months until he retired. Charles was a lifetime member of the American Legion post #50 and Local U.A.W. #9.
