MISHAWAKA - Stella Vander Wende, 75, of Ireland Trail, Mishawaka, Ind., passed away at 11:13 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 27, in her residence. Mrs. Vander Wende was born on Jan. 11, 1923, in Walkerton, Ind., to Louis and Olga (Pipke) Kemp, who have both preceded her in death.

Mrs. Vander Wende worked as an operator for Indiana Bell for 39 years, retiring in 1981.

On Sept. 27, 1947, in St. Joseph Catholic Church, as Stella Kemp, she married Joseph Vander Wende, who preceded her in death on March 4, 1992. Mrs. Vander Wende is survived by two daughters, Mary Jane (William) Groome of Kokomo, Ind., and Nancy (Denis) Burns of South Bend, Ind.; a son, Phil Vander Wende of Mishawaka; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Leola (William) Henderson of Indianapolis, Ind., and Alta (Beckwith) Kisselburgh of Carlsbad, Calif.; and by a brother, Levi (June) Kemp of Walkerton.

Mrs. Vander Wende was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Pioneers Club. Services will be at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 1, in St. Joseph Catholic Church. Officiating will be Rev. Robert Yast. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 31, at the Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th Street, Mishawaka.
