EX-FARM BUREAU OFFICIAL RENE VANDEWALLE DIES

SOUTH BEND - Rene A. Vandewalle, 82, of Ironwood Drive, a retired farmer and former secretary-treasurer of St. Joseph County Farm Bureau, died at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in Countryside Place, Mishawaka, of natural causes.

 

He was named Sagamore of the Wabash by former Govs. Otis Bowen and Robert D. Orr. He was president of the Centre-Greene Farm Bureau for 11 years. Mr. Vandewalle retired as manager of the LaPorte Production Credit Association (now Farm Credit Service) after 15 years. He was a trustee and assesor of Centre Township from 1946-54. Mr. Vandewalle served on the St. Joseph County Area Plan Commission for eight years, was past president of St. Joseph County Extension Service. He was a precinct committeeman for the Republican party for 25 years, was active in the St. Joseph County 4-H, serving as president for five years.

 

He was born Oct. 27, 1912, in Mishawaka. On May 4, 1935, in South Bend, he married Elsie LaCluyze. She survives with four sons, Thomas L. and John D., both of South Bend, Neal R. of San Diego and Brian of Madison, Wis.; 13 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a sister, Bertha Battles of South Bend.

 

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial will be in Southlawn Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday in Guisinger Colonial Chapel Funeral Home, where a parish rosary will be said at 4 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph County 4-H Scholarship Fund.
