Sister Muriel Van Doren CSC

Sister Muriel (Frances Margaret Van Doren) CSC, was born in Washington, D.C., to the late Frances T. L. Van Doren and Margaret C. McCarty Van Doren. Her sister, Helen E. Van Doren of College Park, Md.; her cousin, Cathy (John P.) Galt of East Greenville, Pa.; and many friends survive her.

 

Sister Muriel received her early education in schools in Washington, D.C. and Virginia. She entered the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross in July 1932, made her first profession in August 1935 and final profession in August 1938. Sister gained her Bachelor's Degree in English and Mathematics at Dunbarton College, Washington, D.C. Sister was trained as a teacher and began her teaching career in 1935 in elementary schools in Texas, Washington D.C. and New York. She then moved to junior high in Lancaster, Pa., Marshall, Texas, and Alexandria, Va., and senior high in Washington DC. She was named Religious Superior and then Librarian at St. Cecilia's, Washington D.C., Librarian at Holy Spirit High School and Librarian Emeritus at the Academy of the Holy Cross, Kensington, Md.

 

Health needs brought her to Saint Mary's, where she lived at Our Lady of Holy Cross, Miami Street, until the renovation of the convent was completed. She was active in the Ministry of Prayer until her death. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of the Holy Cross Ministry with the Poor Fund, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame, IN 46556.

 

Wake service will be at 9:30 a.m. today, Feb. 24, in the Church of Our Lady of Loretto, Saint Mary's Notre Dame, Ind. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. today, Feb. 24, in the Church of Our Lady of Loretto, Saint Mary's Notre Dame. The Kaniewski Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
