John U. Van Paemel

May 24, 1916 - July 27, 2002

John U. Van Paemel, 86, residing on Carl Avenue, South Bend, Ind., passed away at 11:30 p.m. Saturday, July 27, in Hospice House, South Bend. He was born May 24, 1916, in Notre Dame, Ind., and had been a lifelong resident of this area. He retired in 1980 from the Dodge Manufacturing Company, Mishawaka, Ind., following 23 years of service.

 

He was married to Jean Busko, who preceded him in death. Then on Oct. 2, 1971, in South Bend, he married Lois Barber, who survives. He is also survived by a son, Jon F. Van Paemel of Twin Lakes, Mich.; a son and daughter by marriage, Keith (Diana) Barber of Morgantown, Ind., and Patricia (JR) Penny of Edwardsburg, Mich.; and by four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

 

Mr. Van Paemel was a member of the Cathedral of St. Matthew were he served as an usher. He was a volunteer at the St. Vincent DePaul Society for 18 years and was the recipient of the Top Hat Award. He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II, where he served in the Philippines for three years. He was also a member of the Moose Lodge #58, South Bend, Fraternal Order of Eagles, and V.F.W. Post 360, both in Mishawaka.

 

A memorial Mass will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 31, in St. Matthew Cathedral, 1701 Miami St., South Bend. Rev. Michael Heintz will officiate. Mr. Van Paemel has donated his body to the Indiana University School of Medicine, Indianapolis, Ind. Burial will take place at a later date at Highland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations in memory of John U. Van Paemel be made to the St. Vincent De Paul Society, 3408 Ardmore Trail, South Bend, IN 46628; or to Hospice of St. Joseph County, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637. Arrangements for the Van Paemel family are being made by the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 South Michigan Street, South Bend.
