Philemon VanTornhout

June 3, 1886March 14, 1959

 

Philemon VanTornhout, 1312 Western Avenue, died at 3am today in the home of his son, George J. VanTornhout, 104 S Orchard Rd., after an illness of three years.

 

He was born in Nevele, Belgium, June 3, 1886, and came to South Bend from Belgium in 1910.  On July 4, 1912, in South Bend he married Miss Mary VanOutreve, who died last November 24.

 

Mr. VanTornhout was a retied jeweler, having operated a jewelry store at the Western Avenue address for over thirty years.

 

Surviving besides the son are two grandchildren and three brothers, Achiel, Raymond and Julius, all of Belgium.

 

Friends may call after 7pm today in the DeVos Chapel, Mishawaka.  Services will be at 9am Monday in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 1130 Thomas St., with Very Rev. Msgr George J. Moorman, pastor, officiating.  Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.  The rosary will be recited at 7:30pmSunday in the funeral home.  Mrs. VanTornhout was a member of the Volkskring.
