Sister M. Raymund Verhalen CSC

Sister M. Raymund (Ruth Julia Verhalen), CSC, 106, was born in Chicago, IL, to the late Stephen J. and Matilda M. Fax Verhalen. She is survived by nieces, Barbara (Robert) Appleby, NC, Agnes (Jack P.) Verhalen, Frances (Don) Smith, Suzanne (Donald) Padgett, all of TX; and nephews, Rev. David Verhalen, CSC, Notre Dame, IN, John Verhalen, Robert Verhalen, Stephen G. Verhalen, all of TX; and cousins, Rev. Charles Verhalen, WI, Dr. Duane Verhalen, CA, Don Brubeck, AZ.

 

Sister Raymund began her early education at Saint Mary's Academy, Marshall, TX. Sister was a graduate of Saint Alphonsus Hospital, Boise, ID, and attended Saint Mary's College, Notre Dame, IN, and Saint Mary of the Springs, Columbus, OH.

 

After entering the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross in 1922, Sister Raymund made her first profession in 1925 and final profession in 1928. In 1922 she began her teaching career in elementary schools of the Congregation and then moved back to hospital work in 1927. Sister graduated from St. Alphonsus School of Nursing in 1930 and was assigned to Saint Joseph's Hospital, South Bend, IN, Mount Carmel Hospital, Columbus, OH, and St. Mary's Hospital, Carol, IL. She served as maintenance supervisor, St. John's Hospital, Anderson, IN, and then served in a variety of capacities in schools and hospitals of the Congregation. Sister was responsible for maintenance and improvement of Saint Mary's campus in the 1950s. Sister Raymund retired to Saint Mary's in the 1960s, worked in various positions and became a member of the Ministry of Prayer until her death.
