Sister M. Agnes Jean Vieno CSC

Sister M. Agnes Jean, CSC, (Patricia Anne Vieno), 71, was born in El Paso, Texas, on May 13, 1931, to the late James Edwin and Mary Agnes Mock Vieno. Sister is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Agnes and William Van Deelen of Fresno, Calif. She is also survived by a niece, Joan Van Deelen and children, Emily and Christopher Boldt; and nephew, Bill (Joni) Van Deelen and daughter, Kaley.

 

Sister Agnes Jean entered the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross in 1949, made her first profession Aug. 15, 1951, and final profession on Aug. 15, 1954. Sister's early education was in California. She gained her bachelor of arts degree in history and Latin in 1962, her master's degree in history, 1971, and her Ph.D. in education, 1989.

 

Sister taught elementary and senior high grades at the following California schools: St. Matthew's, Modesto; St. Agnes and St. Paul's, Los Angeles; Holy Rosary Academy, Woodland; St. Charles' School, San Francisco; St. John's, Fresno; Stella Maris Academy, LaJolla; Sacred Heart, Lancaster; St. Clements, Santa Monica; and St. Stanislaus, Modesto. In 1984 she was a doctoral student and then a professor at the University of San Francisco. Sister Agnes Jean worked for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles as administrator of the Writing to Read program for kindergarten and first-grade students.

 

In 1996 Sister went on medical leave and transferred to Saint Mary's, Notre Dame, Ind., where she was active in the Ministry of Prayer at Augusta Hall and Saint Mary's Convent until her death.

Wake service will be at 4 p.m. today, April 9, in the Church of Our Lady of Loretto, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 10, in the Church of Our Lady of Loretto, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame. The Kaniewski Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
