SOUTH BEND - Marcel H. "Mike" Vroman, 86, of South Bend, Indiana, passed away Friday, August 29, 2008, in his home. Marcel was born October 21, 1921, in Moline, Illinois, to the late Achiel and Marie (Neyrinck) Vroman, and had lived in Belgium as a child. Marcel and his family lived in Granger, Indiana, for 18 years before moving to South Bend in 2000. Marcel retired in March 1982 as an international finance manager with Steiger Tractor Company in Fargo, North Dakota, where he was employed for six years. He had also been employed with Deere and Company and John Deere Limited (Canada) and John Deere S.A. (France) for a combined total of 15 years; Clark Equipment Company and Clark Commercial (France) for five years combined total; and taught for three years at Notre Dame and Saint Mary's Colleges. On February 26, 1946, Marcel married Ida Speleers, who preceded him in death on March 12, 1960. He then married Catherine H. Campbell on October 19, 1963. Surviving are his wife, Catherine H. Vroman of South Bend, Indiana; a daughter, Sheila (David) Haas of Wauconda, Illinois; and a granddaughter, Laura Bailey of Chicago, Illinois. Marcel was a member of Corpus Christi Parish, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, where he served in the U.S. Army Reserve Corps, and was later recalled during the Korean Conflict. He was also a member of Senior Corps of Retired Executives (S.C.O.R.E.), the former University Club of Notre Dame, and was a former member of the Notre Dame Alumni Association.
