Sister M. Monica (Mary Margaret Wagner) CSC, was born in Tiffin, Ohio, to the late Christian H. Wagner and Margaret (Weingartner) Wagner. She was predeceased by a brother and sister.

 

Sister Monica is survived by nieces, Margaret (Kenneth) McDonough of Coshocton, Ohio, and Kathleen Hart of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Richard Scheibers and Thomas J. Schiebers, both of Tiffin, Ohio, and Savery Gradoville of Arlington, Va., and many other friends.

 

Before entering the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross in 1933. Sister Monica graduated with a BA degree in Latin and Greek from Saint Mary's College, Notre Dame, Ind. She taught, and was Senior Class Sponsor at the Academy of the Holy Cross, Washington, D.C. She earned her MA, 1938, and Ph.D., 1945, in Greek and Latin from Catholic University of America, Washington D.C.

 

Sister Monica taught at Dunbarton College for nearly 20 years, 1941-1960, was a member of the General Council, Sisters of the Holy Cross, and returned as Dean of Studies at Dunbarton College in 1967. In 1969, Sister was dean of Studies and Teacher in the Saint Mary's College Program, Rome, Italy. Returning to Notre Dame in 1976, she was part of a special assignment for community Development, was in the General Secretariat for the Sisters of the Holy Cross, volunteered in the Cushwa-Leighton Library and was assistant archivist in the library. In 1994, Sister Monica was doing volunteer service to the community and was active in the Ministry of Prayer until her death.

 

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of the Holy Cross Ministry with the Poor Fund, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame, IN 46556.

 

Reception of the Body and Wake will be Monday, June 5, 2006, at 4 p.m. in Church of Our Lady of Loretto, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame, IN.

 

Funeral services will be Tuesday, June 6, 2006, at 10:30 a.m. in Church of Our Lady of Loretto, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame, IN.
