Cecil A. Walters

South Bend, IN — Cecil A. Walters, 90 years old, residing on Rue Voltaire, South Bend, passed away at 10:45 p.m. on Saturday, November 17, 2001, at the Southfield Village, South Bend.

 

Mr. Walters was born on October 27, 1911 in Rosedale, IN, to the late John and Lena (Day) Walters. He has lived in South Bend most of his life. On October 13, 1945, in Indianapolis, IN, he married Hyla F. VanHook who preceded in death on July 25, 2001. Also preceding in death was one sister, Sylvia Frye; and two brothers, Paul and Herman Walters.

 

Mr. Walters retired in 1976 from the former Radio Furniture Mart in South Bend in retail sales. He was a 50 years member of the St. Joseph Lodge No. 45, F & AM.

 

Mr. Walters served his country in World War II with the United States Army serving in the Central Pacific, Guadacanal, and Southern Philippines. He also was present at the Battle of Truk, receiving a battle honor.

 

Mr. Walters is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Bruce A. and Vicki Walters of South Bend; three grandchildren, Rebecca (Chris) Cernak of Mishawaka, Kevin Walters of South Bend, and Janice (James) Baker of Niles, MI; and two great-granddaughters, Madison Baker and Lauren Cernak.

 

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. today, November 19, 2001 at the Southlawn Cemetery, South Bend. Burial will follow. Rev. Don Francis will officiate.

 

There will be no visitation.

 

In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Cecil A. Walters may be donated to the Charity of the donor's choice. Palmer Funeral Home, South Bend, is in charge of the funeral arrangements. (nf)
