South Bend Tribune 2/10/2008
SOUTH BEND - James W. Ward Jr., 85, died at 7:47 p.m. Thursday, February 7, in Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center in South Bend, IN, following a period of failing health. He is survived by his wife, Nancy (Young) Ward; his daughter, Cindy L. Ward (Bob Johnson); and his son, James W. Ward III, all of South Bend. He was born on March 19, 1922, in Louisville, KY, and lived most of his life in Pittsburgh, PA, where he was a manufacturer's representative for various industrial supply companies.

He married Nancy B. Young on June 24, 1950. He moved to South Bend following retirement and lived here his final eight years. Jim Ward lived a full and varied life. He was a graduate of Pittsburgh's Shadyside Academy and Yale University, where he sang with that school's famous Wiffenpoof glee club. He was an infantryman in World War II and marched across Europe under General George Patton in the waning days of the war. He was a member of the Pittsburgh Field Club for many years, where he enjoyed golf and skeet shooting. He loved his family, hunting, dogs and the Pittsburgh Steelers. He believed in living "high, hard and handsome," and was an example of that philosophy to the end. Jim will be missed by family and friends alike.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, Feb. 12, at 11 a.m. in Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1501 W. Cleveland Road in South Bend. Friends may gather to greet the family beginning at 10 a.m. The family asks that donations be made in Jim Ward's name to the charity of the donor's choice. Kaniewski Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
