SOUTH BEND -- Irene M. Wartha, 94, formerly of South Bend, died Tuesday in her home in Bloomfield Hills, Mich. Survivors include two daughters, Dolores O'Brien of Bloomfield Hills and Kathleen Muller of Auburndale, Mass. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Holy Cross Catholic Church. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today in Welsheimer Family Funeral Home, 521 N. William St., where a rosary will be said at 4:15 p.m.

Irene M. Wartha (Jan. 29, 1912 -- July 4, 2006).

Irene M. Wartha, 94, formerly of South Bend, passed away Tuesday, July 4, 2006, at her home in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, where she had lived for the last three years.

 

She was born on January 29, 1912, in Hungary, to the late Francis J. and Katherine (Janossy) Gombor. Irene graduated from Central High School where she was active in the performing arts. On July 3, 1937, she married Rudolph M. Wartha, who preceded her in death on December 6, 1990. Also preceding her in death was her brother, Carl F. Gombor.

 

Irene was an active volunteer at the former St. Stephen's Hungarian Church in South

Bend. She also was an active volunteer with the Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center Auxiliary for 40 years in South Bend. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Irene enjoyed gardening, reading and music.

 

She is survived by her loving family: her two daughters, Dolores M. (William) O'Brien of Bloomfield Hills, MI, and Kathleen W. (James) Muller of Auburndale, MA; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

 

Friends may visit with her family today, July 7, 2006, from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home, 521 N. William Street, South Bend. A Rosary will take place at 4:15 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in Holy Cross Catholic Church, with burial to follow at Highland Cemetery.
