Harriet Ann Watkins

MISHAWAKA - Harriet Ann Watkins, 89, passed away peacefully with family by her side after a brief illness at 12:28 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 3rd, in the Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center. The oldest of seven children, Harriet was born on October 19, 1918, in Argos, to Carrow and Leona (Zimpleman) Garman. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Mary Jane Rigley; and by brothers, Herb, Chuck and Hugh Garman. On August 15, 1943, she married James L. Watkins, who also preceded her in death on March 12, 2008, after 64 years of marriage. She is survived by a daughter, Linda (Ken) Nellans of South Bend; and sons, Richard (Christine) Watkins of Edwardsburg, MI, and Paul (Cathy) Watkins of Williamsburg, IN. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Michael (Madeline) Watkins, Amber Sherwood, Nathan and Nancy Nellans; four great-grandchildren; and by many nieces and nephews. Harriet raised her family in the Mishawaka area, working at Ball Band for over 15 years, and retired to Fort Pierce, FL, in 1984 where she became active in Ruth Chapter 7 of the Eastern Star. In 1991 she was appointed as Ruth in one of the Five-Star points and in 1993 she was elected to two terms as Worthy Matron, the highest presiding office. She was also a lifetime member of VFW Post 360 woman's auxiliary. Harriet had a remarkable passion for life that was inspiring. She enjoyed spending time with her family as well as friends at The Village at Arborwood where she was considered an avid euchre player. She also enjoyed working on many craft projects and found great joy in giving them away to family and friends.

 

A visitation is scheduled to remember Harriet's life from 3 to 5 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 7th, in Bubb Funeral Chapel, 3910 N. Main St., Mishawaka, where a Christian service will immediately follow. Donations in Harriet's memory may be made to the American Heart Association or to the Order of the Eastern Star, 626-C Pine Knolls Drive, Fort Pierce, FL 34982. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the doctors and staff at Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center who gave such excellent care to Harriet. Their compassion and kindness is greatly appreciated.
