Carl Weigel

Carl G. Weigel, 73, of 63619 State Road 331, South Bend, owner of Weigel Construction co. for 37 years, died at 9:45 p.m. Sunday in his home after a three-year illness.  He was born in St. Joseph County, on April 9, 1910, and was a lifelong resident of the area. 

 

On Oct. 12, 1929, in St. Joseph County, he married Edna M. Hesch, who survives.

 

Also surviving are four daughters, Mrs. James (Dolores) Hunsberger and Mrs. Arthur (Patsy) Harker, both of Mishawaka, Mrs. George (Shirley) Engelhardt of Bremen and Mrs. Donald (Joyce) Leak of Bothell, Wash.; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a brother, Donald J. of Hardy, Ark. 

 

A former employee of Dodge Manufacturing and Bendix Aviation, he was owner and operator of Weigel Construction Co. for the past 37 years, during which time he supervised the construction of the St. Joseph County Fairgrounds, the Emmons School field and Sprig O’ Mint golf course.  He was a member of St. John United Church of Christ, Woodland, and the Madison Twp. Lions Club, where he was charter president.

 

Services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday in St. John United Church of Christ, Woodland.  Rev. Harold Kratzat, pastor, will officiate.  Burial will be in St. John United Church of Christ Cemetery, also in Woodland.  Friends may call from 1 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in Hahn’s DeVos Funeral Home and from 2 p.m. until services Wednesday in the church. 

 

Memorial contributions may be made to the church, United Health Services or the Lions Club.
