Myrtle Josephine Weiss

Mishawaka - Myrtle Josephine Weiss, 90, was born in Roseau, Minn., on Dec. 12, 1907, to Norwegian parents, Ole and Rose (Larson) Johnson. Her father immigrated to the United States from Oslo, Norway, at the age of 14. The family of three children moved from Roseau to Powhatan, Va., in 1911 when Myrtle was four, then moved to Trumansburg, N.Y., in 1925, where she met Irvin Weiss, and finally moved to Auburn, N.Y., in 1928.

 

Myrtle and Irvin were married in Skaneateles, N.Y., on March 23, 1929. He preceded her in death on Aug. 31, 1981. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Julia Wintermute, who passed away on April 26, 1987.

 

Myrtle died in the home of her daughter, June Ross in Mishawaka, Ind., at 8 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 5.

 

She is survived by her daughters, Marian (Peter) Brein of Greensburg, Pa., twins, June (James) Ross and Joan (Arthur) Boronow of Lancaster, Pa.; a son, Charles (Barbara) Weiss of Excelsior Springs, Mo.; 12 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren; a sister, Inga Alice Johnson of Mishawaka; and by two brothers, Rudolph Johnson of Lake Park, Fla., and Melvin Johnson of California.

 

Myrtle was a dress maker for 40 years at the Ginsberg Dress Factory in Auburn, N.Y., and was an accomplished quilter. She had taken care of her semi-invalid sister for 23 years. She was a lifelong member of the Immanuel Baptist Church in Auburn, N.Y., where she supplied bouquets of flowers for church services. She had preserved many friendships for the family over the years with her letter-writing.

 

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday in the Thallemer-Goethals Funeral Home. Services will follow immediately at 4 p.m. in the funeral home, with Rev. Warren Banks of the Gospel Center Church officiating. Burial will follow on Tuesday, Feb. 10, in the Soule Cemetery, Auburn, N.Y.
