“Company 8 Fire Captain Julius Wentland Dies”

Julius Wentland, 45, captain of the South Bend Fire Department, died at 4 p.m. Monday in his home at 2629 Frederickson St. He had been ill with cancer for six months

A lifelong resident of South Bend, Capt. Wentland was born on Feb. 15, 1918, and married Alice Sikorski in St. Casimir’s Catholic Church on June 15, 1940

He was appointed to the department on Jan. 26, 1948 and assigned to Station 13 when he was promoted to captain on Jan. 1, 1956

 

Trapped at Singer Fire

Before his last assignment at Company 8, he also had been assigned to the aerial crew at Station 4 and also served as captain of Company 10

During the Singer Manufacturing fire in 1960, Capt. Wentland received first degree burns on his arms, face and back when trapped by flames on the second floor; he was forced to hang by the eaves of the building

He was rescued when the late Mayor Edward T. Voorde noticed his predicament and called for a ladder

 

List Survivors

Besides his widow, he is survived by his mother, Mrs. Sylvania Wentland of South Bend, a son, Ronald, and a daughter, Sandra, both at home

Funeral rites will be conducted at 9 a.m. Friday in St. Stanislaus Church with the pastor, Rev. Sigmund Jankowski, C.S.C., officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.

Friends may call after 7 p.m. Wednesday at the St. Joseph Funeral Home.

Capt. Wentland was a member of the Fireman’s Assn., the Fifth District Democratic Club, and the West Side Democratic Club.

WENTLAND – Services for Fire Capt. Julius Wentland, who died Monday in his home at 2629 Frederickson St. will be at 9 a.m. Friday in St. Stanislaus Catholic Church with Mr. Wentland’s cousins, Rev. Donald Zeil, C.S.C., of Niles, Ill. officiating.  Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Hillary Staszewski, Bernard Zymslo, Edward Pinkowski, Richard Sopczynski, John Gadacz and Peter Sabinas.  The rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. today and Thursday in the St. Joseph Funeral Home.
