SOUTH BEND - Sister M. Raphaelita Whalen, CSC, 87, of St. Mary's Convent, died at 6:06 a.m. today in the convent. Sister Whalen was born April 28, 1906, in Pontiac, Ill., as Catherine Frances Whalen.

She entered the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross on Oct. 24, 1928, was received as a novice on Aug. 15, 1929, and professed her vows on Aug. 15, 1931. She was assigned as an elementary and secondary teacher at St. Joseph's Academy and in Michigan City, Hammond, Illinois and Michigan. She served as director of admissions and admissions consultant at Saint Mary's College.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday in Church of Loretto, Saint Mary's College. Burial will be in Our Lady of Peace Cemetery, Saint Mary's College. Friends may call after 3 p.m. Sunday in the church where a wake service will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday. Memorial contributions may be made to Sisters of the Holy Cross Ministry with the Poor Fund, Bertrand Hall, Saint Mary's College, Notre Dame, Ind., 46556. Hickey Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
