George F. Wiegand Sr.

Aug. 27, 1942 - March 29, 2003

SOUTH BEND — George F. Wiegand Sr., 60, passed away after suffering an apparent heart attack at 9:03 p.m. Saturday, March 29, in Saint Joseph's Regional Medical Center, South Bend, Ind. Mr. Wiegand was born on Aug. 27, 1942, in Fort Wayne, Ind., and had resided in the South Bend area since 1959. He was preceded in death by his father, Arthur G. Wiegand on March 21, 1978.

 

On Oct. 8, 1966, in Mishawaka, Ind., he married the former Barbara A. Sobieralski, who survives. He is also survived by his mother, Audria M. (MacWhinney) Wiegand of South Bend; a daughter, Jennifer L. (Mat) Greener of Carmel, Ind.; and by two sons, George F. (Lynne) Wiegand Jr. of Carmel and Geoffrey M. Wiegand of South Bend. George is also survived by his three loving grandchildren, whom he loved and cherished; a sister, Pamela Evard of Granger, Ind.; and by two brothers, Arthur G. Wiegand of Granger and Dr. Thomas J. Wiegand of Angola, Ind.

 

George was employed at Total Enterprises LTD in South Bend, and served as the secretary/treasurer. He was a former part-owner of the company. Mr. Wiegand was a member of St. Matthew's Cathedral, was a former Boy Scout leader of Troop 111, and was also an Eagle Scout. He was past grand knight and a 4th degree in the Knights of Columbus Council 1878 in Mishawaka.

 

Visitation hours were from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 1, in the Hanley & Sons "Southwest Chapel" Funeral Home, located at West Ireland Road/Indiana 23, South Bend. A Rosary was said at 7 p.m. Tuesday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1 p.m. today in Saint Matthew's Cathedral, with the Rev. Michael Heintz officiating. Burial will follow at Southlawn Cemetery. The family requests that all memorial contributions be made to the American Diabetes Association, 53631 Fir Road, Granger, IN 46530. The HANLEY & Sons "Southwest Chapel" Funeral Home handled the arrangements and services and extend deepest sympathy and heartfelt prayers to the family.
