Brother Willibrord CSC

Oct. 8, 1872 – Feb. 23, 1938

South Bend Tribune 2/23/1938

The inventor of the Notre Dame bun, praised even in poems, lives no more. Brother Willibrord CSC, head of the Notre Dame bakeries from 1900 until the new dining hall was built in 1927, died early this morning in St. Joseph Hospital, South Bend. He had been ill for the last two years since retirement. He was a baker in his native Holland, supplied only the religious houses on the campus with his baked goods after the dining halls were built at Notre Dame. Thousands of Notre Dame alumni who knew him by sight did not know he was a member of the community, owing to his white baker’s garb. The famed Notre Dame bun was a delicious round biscuit served at the meals. He was born in Zevenaar Holland, Oct. 8, 1872. He entered the brotherhood of the Congregation of the Holy Cross Aug. 15, 1900, and was place in charge of the Notre Dame bakeries.

The funeral will be held at 8:30 a.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Church on the campus, with burial in community cemetery at Notre Dame.
