Rev. Robert W. Woodward CSC, 74, of the Holy Cross House, Notre Dame, died early Sunday at the house after a lengthy illness. He was born on May 3, 1906 in Toledo, Ohio, and entered St. Joseph Novitiate at Notre Dame in 1923. He made his first profession of vows in the Congregation of Holy Cross in 1924 and graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1928. After theology studies at Holy Cross College, Washington DC, he was ordained to the priesthood on June 24, 1932 at Sacred Heart Church, Notre Dame. He served in the Army Chaplain Corps from 1941 to 1946 in the eastern defense command in Iceland, Greenland, Bermuda and Newfoundland, and was awarded the Army Commendation Ribbon. He had taught for many years at the University of Notre Dame. From 1950 to 1964 he was director of military affairs at Notre Dame and was instrumental in the national revision ot ROTC programs and the establishment of a ROTC general military science program throughout the country. He retired to Holy Cross House 1964.

 

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Moreau Seminary at Notre Dame. Friends may call after 3:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Seminary Chapel, where a wake will be at 7:30 p.m.
