Irene D. Young

Irene D. Young, 65, who resided on Olive Road, South Bend, Ind., passed away at 6:10 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 16, in Memorial Hospital, South Bend. She was born on July 29, 1934, in Monticello County, Ky., to the late George and Bertha (Sharp) Thompson, and had resided in the South Bend area most of her life.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Tamara Young on May 6, 1997; a son, Dale Young in 1978; three sisters, Josephine McCloud, Wyneama Bowling and Jean Myers; and by a brother, Thomas Thompson.

 

As Irene Thompson she married Daniel Young on April 11, 1953, in Mishawaka, Ind. He survives. She is also survived by three daughters, Charilyn (Richard) Campbell and Marietta (Harlan) Conley, both of South Bend, and Sylvia (Lee) Gilbert of Wakarusa, Ind.; two sons, Wayne (Catherine) Young of South Bend and Daniel (Brenda) Young, Jr., of Walkerton, Ind.; 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Dorothy Matthews of South Bend and Irma Vellucci of Hawaii; and by two brothers, Harlan Thompson of Wisconsin and Ralph Criswell of Tennessee.

 

Mrs. Young was a member of the Christian Center Cathedral of Praise, 530 E. Ireland Road, where services will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 19, with Rev. Frank Sumrall, pastor of the church, officiating. Burial will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola, Ind. The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. today in the Palmer Funeral Home, 2528 Mishawaka Avenue, South Bend, and from one hour prior to services on Saturday in the church.
