SOUTH BEND -- Cecil R. Zeiger, 88, died Thursday in Hospice House of St. Joseph County of natural causes. Survivors include his wife, Mary E.; and a daughter, Susan Robertson of South Bend. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Palmer Funeral Home-River Park, 2528 Mishawaka Ave. There will be no visitation.

Cecil Raymond Zeiger, 88, of South Bend, IN, died at 12:45 a.m. Thursday, March 30, 2006, in Hospice House, South Bend.

 

Mr. Zeiger was a self-employed grocer on South Bend's east side and in River Park for many years. Following retirement, he worked part-time at Hertz Car Rental.

 

He was born on September 22, 1917, in St. Joseph County, IN, to Charles and Gertie (Hardy) Zeiger, and was a lifelong resident.

 

On October 29, 1939, in First Brethren Church of South Bend, he married Mary Ellen Claxton. They enjoyed 66 1/2 years of marriage.

 

Mr. Zeiger is survived by his loving wife, Mary Ellen Zeiger; one daughter, Susan Robertson of South Bend; and two grandchildren, John Wesley Robertson II and Marlowe Whitney Robertson, both of Burbank, CA.

 

Mr. Zeiger was a lifelong member of River Park United Methodist Church, a member of the Mishawaka Eagles Lodge, South Bend Moose Lodge 58, River Park Businessman's Association, American Legion River Park Post 303 and the River Park Fisherman's Club. He and Mary Ellen loved to dance and were members of the Guys & Dolls Dance Club. Mr. Zeiger enlisted in the United States Army in 1942 during World War II, and was honorably discharged on April 4, 1946. He also volunteered at Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, South Bend.

 

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 4, 2006, in Palmer Funeral Home-River Park, 2528 Mishawaka Avenue, South Bend. Rev. Kathy Miller, pastor of River Park United Methodist Church, will officiate.
