SOUTH BEND - Sister M. Melanie Zerega, CSC, 77, of Our Lady of Holy Cross Convent, died at 3:05 p.m. Tuesday in her residence. Sister M. Melanie was born Nov. 13, 1916, in Washington, D.C., as Eileen Rose Zerega.

She entered the Congregation of Sisters of the Holy Cross on June 30, 1935; was received as a novice on Jan. 6, 1936; and professed her vows on Feb. 2, 1938. She was assigned to teaching in elementary and secondary schools from 1938 to 1974 and taught in Virginia, Texas, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Washington, D.C. In 1974, she was assigned to retreat and pastoral work at St. Mary's Convent and in Marrero, La. She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday in Church of Loretto, Saint Mary's. Burial will be in Our Lady of Peace Cemetery, Saint Mary's. Friends may call after 3 p.m. Thursday in the church, where a wake will be at 7:30 p.m. Hickey Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
