Mary L. Zollinger

May 29, 1908 -- Jan. 4, 2004

                                        

Beloved mother, Mary Louise Zollinger, 95, formerly of Paul's Way, South Bend, Ind., passed away in Sterling House at 11:10 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 4.

Mary was born on May 29, 1908, to the late Frank and Bertha Goyert Hazen. On Aug. 18, 1930, she married Claude Zollinger in Indianapolis, Ind. He passed away on Dec. 25, 1970. Mary was also preceded in death by a brother, Goyert Hazen in 1969; sisters, Vera Mae Wickens in 1991 and Bernice Ann Dillehay in 1983; son-in-law, John H. Horning in 2000; great-great-grandson, Winter Star in 2002; and a great-great-granddaughter, Michaela in 2002.

Mary is survived by her son, Jack (Vivian) Zollinger of Gosport, Ind.; daughter, Mary Jane Horning of South Bend; brother-in-law, Richard Wickens of Louisiana; grandchildren, Janis Hopper of Niles, Mich., Carole (Steve) Blankenbaker, John H. (Lisa) Horning Jr. of South Bend, Pamela (Larry) King of Anderson, Ind., and Debra (Mike) Greskamp of Minnesota; great-grandchildren, Brian, Stephanie, Sarah, Michael, Jay, Tim, Susan, Kelly, Brian and Kara; great-great-grandchildren, Nathan, Lily and Caleb. Mary is also survived by a cousin, Willa (Bill) Ford of Greensburg.

Mary graduated from Greensburg High School in 1926. In 1929 she graduated from the St. Vincent's Hospital School of Nursing. Her marriage to Claude took her to many moves, including Fort Wayne, Muncie, Indianapolis and South Bend. Mary used her gentle and compassionate nursing skills throughout her life, caring for family members when the need arose. She will be missed by all who knew her.

Mary was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Greensburg. She was also a member of Christ Presbyterian Church in Indianapolis, Ind., where she put in many hours volunteering.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 7, in the Gilliland-Howe Funeral Home, Greensburg, where friends may call one hour prior to services. Burial will be next to her husband at South Park Cemetery, Greensburg.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of St. Joseph County, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637-3437.

Mary's family wishes to thank the staff and caregivers of Sterling House and Hospice for all of their help and loving care of our Mother.
