Mary M. Zubler, 53, passed away peacefully at 1:01 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 30, in the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, after a courageous 15-month-long battle with cancer. All of us who knew Mary, knew that she lived her entire life the same way she fought this lengthy illness, courageously and positive.

She was born on Dec. 1, 1947, in Frankfort, Mich., and was the youngest of 12 siblings. She is survived by husband, Michael Zubler of Houston; brother, Laverne Scott of Thomsonville, Mich.; sisters, Ethel Lawrence of Elkhart, Ind., and Ardith Hazel of Traverse City, Mich.; stepson, Aaron Zubler of Bloomington, Ind.; and by other loving relatives and friends.

Mary has been employed as a nurse at MD Anderson from 1994 until she was diagnosed with cancer in August 2000, and received recognition as employee of the month in August 1995.

She earned her LVN degree from Southwestern Michigan College in Dowagiac, Mich., and her associate's degree of nursing from Houston Baptist University in 1998, where she was named a member of Alpha Chi, scholastic honor society.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today, Dec. 4, in the chapel of Memorial Oaks Funeral Home, 13001 Kathy Freeway, where a vigil service will be held beginning at 7 p.m., with Deacon Al Vacek officiating. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, in St. John Vianney Catholic Church, 625 Nottingham Oaks Trail, with Rev. Niall Nolan as celebrant. Rite of Committal services will follow at Memorial Oaks Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Mary's name to The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, 1515 Holcombe Blvd., Houston, TX 77030.
