CLAYTON HUFF TRAGEDY VICTIM ; SAVE COMPANION

TWO SMALL BOYS , SWIMMING IN DEEP WATER , SOUTH OF MEROM , PULLED UNDER BY STRONG CURRANT -- THREE HOUR EFFORT TO RESTORE LIFE FAILS -- FIRST SULLIVAN COUNTY DROWNING THIS YEAR.

Clayton Huff Jr., 9 years old son of Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Huff of Merom, drowned in the Wabash river about a half mile south of the Merom ferry Saturday afternoon. The little boy, known familiarly to Merom peoples as " Buddy" and a companion Teddy French had gone to a point below the sandbar, on the Illinois side opposite Merom, and both boys were swept under by the strong currant at this point. Al Woodall, grandfather of the French boy pulled his grandson out of the deep water but the Huff boy never came to the surface of the water after he had been swept under. About 30 minutes later the body was brought to the surface by Woodall, through use of mussel hooks. Feverish efforts were made to revive the boy, but they were futile. Funeral services for the boy were held at two thirty o'clock this afternoon at the Merom Methodist church with the Rev. E.N. Rosier officiating. Interment was made at Merom. The drowning of the Huff youth is believed to be the first drowning that has occurred this year in which a Sullivan county person has been the victim. There is no quicksand at the point where the tragedy occurred, however the currant is very swift and the water deep. Ralph Dex and William Davis, two Merom boys were pulling out a trot line at this place and "Buddy" Huff and Teddy French, who is also 9 years old, went swimming in the deep water. Two other persons have drowned in this same place south of Merom. Dr. Parker at Merom was notified when the Huff boy failed to reappear on the surface of the water, and while efforts were made to locate the body, Parker called Pete Corzetto, Sullivan Fire Chief and asked that the pulmotor and ambulance be rushed to the scene. Corzetto, accompanied by fireman Pittman of Sullivan and Emmett Cox in the Billman Ambulance, rushed to Merom and Pulmotor was taken to the Illinois side and an effort an effort was made to revive the youth soon after the body had been brought from the water. Finally, after working with the pulmotor for two hours, the body, with the pulmotor apparatus still attached to it, was place in the ambulance and brought to the Mary Sherman Hospital, where oxygen was administered in a final effort to revive the boy. Dr. Parker continued to operate the pulmotor during the trip from Merom to Sullivan in the ambulance, but every effort to restore life was futile. The parents of the boy were nearly prostrated Saturday when they learned their son had drowned. He was the only boy in the home. Besides the parents, four sisters, Naoma, Helna, Reva, and Minerva survive, and the grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J.K. Smith of north of Merom. A host of other distant relatives also survive. The child's mother was unaware of the fact that he had gone swimming in the deep water until she learned of the tragedy. "Buddy" was an exceptionally bright lad, and a favorite with many. He was in the third grade of the Merom school and his death Saturday came as a great shock to his little friends and classmates. The drowning occurred about mid-afternoon and the body was brought to Sullivan to the hospital about five o'clock. It was later removed to the Rislager and Kresge funeral home at Carlisle for preparation for burial. The father of the dead youth is well known, having been employed in the mines in this section for a number of years.
