Sullivan County Obituaries - Park Beard
March 29, 1889 Friday Sullivan Democrat Shocking Accident - A livery stable loft falls and crushes Park Beard - Wednesday morning about ten o'clock a dreadful accident happened at the livery stable of Eslinger & Drake, by which Mr. Stephen Park Beard lost his life without a moment' warning and several others made narrow escapes. The proprietors were in receipt of a large quantity of corn which they were storing in the hay lift overhead. There were about five hundred bushels in the mow when a section of the flooring between two cross-beams gave way and came down with a crash. Mr. Park Beard was directly under the center engaged in conversation with Mr. Eslinger and was crushed beneath the mass of florring and weight of corn. Mr. Eslinger also received a blow on his shoulder which knocked him outward, resulting only in a painful bruise. Bill Miller was also standing near Mr. Beard, preparing to wash a buggy, but was nearer the wall and escaped by a window without receiving any injury. Mr. Bill Martin had just passed from beneath the fatal section a moment before the crash. The noise of the fall together with the report that a man was beneath the debris, attracted a crown of men who went to work vigorously shoveling away the pile of corn. Although the men worked vigorously it seemed a painfully long time before they got it away so the flooring and timbers could be lifted to reach Mr. Beard. He was found lying on his back, his head pressed forward on his breast and was dead when taken out, his neck having been broken. Mr. Beard was a most excellent man aged about fifty-five years. He was a son of the late Wm. Beard, was raised a few miles northwest of town and within the past few weeks had moved to town. Since the accident, there has been universal condemnation of the style in which the stable was built. The supports for the joists was simply a cleat nailed on cross beams with a scant supply of nails. On this was put a weight of about 30,000 pounds. Mr. Beard was buried at Little Flock Cemetery.
