Sullivan County Obituaries - Eli Dix
Sullivan Democrat, 22 August 1877 Last Sunday morning Mr. Eli Dix died at his residence in Fairbanks Township, aged 63 years, 10 months and 23 days. He was born in Guilford county, North Carolina, September 23, 1813, and emigrated to this county in the year 1819. He married at an early age, and by industry and frugal habits, succeeded in accumulating a large estate. As he showed ability in the management of his personal business the people called him to the office of County Commissioner, a place for which he was well qualified, and in which he served continuously for six years. At the last general election he was re-elected for another term, and would have taken his seat on the Board next December. In 1845 Mr. Dix joined the Christian church, in which relation he continued until his death. He leaves and aged wife and eight children, all of whom are grown and married except one. Mr. Dix was one of the leading men of the community in which he lived. He was a liberal contributor to the church, having been instrumental in having a meeting house erected on his farm. The large number of people who assembled to pay the last tribute of respect to his memory, attested the high regard to which he was held by his neighbors and the public.
