Biography

William F. North

miller, Patriot, son of Lot North, was born in Rising Sun in 1848. He remained with his parents till sixteen years of age, and then entered the service, naval department, aboard the steamer "Victoria" of the Mississippi squadron, serving nine months, enlisting in 1864. He returned home and with his bounty money went to Bartlett's Commercial College, Cincinnati, and graduated from the same. He subsequently engaged as book-keeper at Memphis in the cotton factory and wholesale grocery and commission house of Calhoun, Nevils & Co., remaining five years in their employ. In 1874 he returned to Patriot and engaged in general merchandising to 1881, when he began milling, which he has continued to the present time. He also does considerable farming. Was married December 30, 1874, to Abbie A. Humphrey, daughter of [Cornelius and] Jane Humphrey, and they have four children: Cornelius H., Emmerson A., Orville J.H. and an infant daughter. Mr. and Mrs. North are members of Methodist Episcopal Church. Mr. North is energetic and enterprising in business matters, and is perhaps the best natured man in Switzerland County.
