Generation No. 1

1. John  Pavy (Samuel2 Pavey II, Samuel1) was born March 17, 1791 in Sussex Co., DE, and died November 09, 1869 in Decatur Co, IN. He married Jane S. Winn September 05, 1811 in Harrison Co, KY, daughter of James Winn and Unknown. She was born January 29, 1792 in KY, and died October 20, 1863 in Decatur Co, IN.

Notes for John Pavy:

John Pavy (sometimes spelled Pavey or Peavy) was a Baptist minister who lived in Kentucky in the early 1800's. He was considered controversial due to his Abolitionist beliefs. He left Gallatin Co, KY in 1823 and moved across the Ohio River to Switzerland Co, IN to avoid the turmoil that his preaching against slavery caused among the church members who were slave owners.
Source: Indiana Historical Collections, History of Switzerland County p.120

He is also mentioned in the book "History of Dearborn, Ohio, and Switzerland Counties Indiana, From Their Earliest Settlement" written in 1885

John Pavy later moved to Decatur Co., In where he preached at Sand Creek Baptist Church. He also preached at the Adams Baptist Church. In 1843 and 1846 he preached at the Liberty Baptist Church in Decatur Co. He also preached in the Salem Baptist Church which was erected in 1831.

Obituary:

From the Minutes of the Forty-Eighth Anniversary of the Flat rock Baptist Association.

Shelbyville Baptist Church, Shelby County, Indiana, Aug 24,25,26, 1870.

Departed this life, November 9, (1869) Elder John Pavy, one of the pioneers of the Baptist cause in Indiana. He was born in March, 1791, in the State of Delaware. Converted in Harrison county, Kentucky.

Baptised about the year 1815, by Elder John Conner. He settled in Indiana in 1818, and commenced preaching soon after, in the bounds of Laughery Association. He was a faithful laborer, both in Indiana and in Kentucky to the close of his life; a man of vigorous zeal for the truth, eminently sound in the Baptist faith, and rigid in its maintenance. He died at home, in Adams, Decatur county, Indiana, in the seventy-ninth year of his age.

Notes for Samuel Husk Pavy:
Samuel Husk Pavy carried on the anti-slavery beliefs of his father, John Pavy. His home in Switzerland Co, IN, which was only about a mile from the Ohio River and right across from Kentucky, was a "station" on the Underground Railroad. The purpose of which was to aid runaway slaves on their journey to Canada and safety. The slaves were hidden in his barn by day and taken away late at night by one of his sons or his wife's brother, Stephen Rogers Gerard, in the false bottom of a loaded flax wagon.
