Biography

Jacob S. Shadday,

merchant, postmaster and township trustee, Center Square, was born in Pleasant Township, October 13, 1842, and completed his education at Hartsville College, Bartholomew County, Ind. His father, Emsley Shadday, was born in Ohio, April 13, 1803; his mother, Polly (Leap) Shadday, in Pennsylvania, November 8, 1805. They were married August 25, 1824, and raised twelve children, nine boys and three girls. His father was a farmer and came to Indiana in 1819. He died May 13, 1882; the mother December 1, 1884. Mr. Jacob S. Shadday was married, March 14, 1871, to Elizabeth Cotton, daughter of Robert Cotton, born in Jefferson Township November 8, 1840. By this union the children are Elmer D., born February 28, 1873; Orville F., born August 21, 1874; Bettie R., born November 28, 1875. Mr. Shadday was elected county assessor in 1872. He was appointed postmaster in 1880, and elected township trustee in 1884. He is a member of Bennington Lodge No. 257, F. & A.M., and Carrollton Chapter, in Kentucky, No. 134. He is a very active business man, and watches carefully all business entrusted to his care. He is a good, honest Democrat and proud of his political standing.
