Newspaper clipping:
Rhoda Belle Stephens
Rhoda Belle Stephens, wife of the late James B. Stephens, and daughter of Samuel and Viola Jackson, was born in the Kickapoo neighborhood, in Warren County, January 19th, 1861. She grew to womanhood there, attending the district schools, the country churches and experiencing the incidents common to the life of all. Her parents lived on a farm, where the work was hard and conveniences were few, and it was here the great virtues that characterize a true "Mother of Israel," were instilled and became a living part of her life. On February 3, 1880 she was united in marriage to James B. Stephens, now deceased. After keeping in Attica they began housekeeping in Attica, later moving to Davis township, Fountain county, and living there until 1914, when they moved to the McLaughlin farm in Warren county. After the death of Mr. Stephens in 1917 she moved to the farm where she had lived until her death. Seven children were born to this union: six boys, Harry, Rollin, Ray, Edward, Clarence and Ora; and one girl, Etha, all of whom, except Ray, survive together with ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. After her marriage she united with the Baptisit Church at Newtown, Ind. She was baptized, and in the faith of that church she always lived a true and faithful Christian life exemplifying those qualities in her daily living without pretense and with sincerity. After a lingering illness, which human hands and skill could not cure, and kind and tender care could not ease its suffering, she departed this life at the St. Elizabeth Hospital, in Danville, Ill. on May 11th, 1929, age 68 years, 3 months and 22 days. Mrs. Stephens has lived a long a useful life. She bore her crosses bravely, never shirking a responsibility, and never denying to others her sweet and tender influence that would make a moment brighter or a burden lighter. In her home she ruled with kindness; her Christian ideals made it a heaven, a sweet retreat and place of refuge for those near and dear to her. She never had time to censure and critisize, but instead she had that faith to believe, and that vision to see that the whole world is kin, that fellowship is Godly and that love alone is the greatest thing in life.
