Greenen-Gagen Wedding
April 21, 1909
Tippecanoe County, Indiana

A beautiful April wedding was solemnized on Wednesday 9 a.m. at Saint Mary ‘s Church, the bride being Miss Esther Loretta Gagen, youngest daughter of Mrs. John P. Gagen (Adeline (Greene) Gagen) and the bridegroom John Joseph Greenen (also known as Joseph J. Greenen), son of Mr. & Mrs. Joseph W. Greenen of Indianapolis. A large number of guests gathered to witness the ceremony, which was pronounced by the Very Rev. John R. Dinnen. Grouped around the alter were palms, ferns, and great bouquets of pink carnations. The guests were escorted to the pews by the ushers, Harry Drew (James Henry Drew) and William A. Dewenter of this city (brother-in-law of Charles Peter Greenen of Indianapolis). Miss Flora G. Schilling played the Mendelssohn Wedding March for the entrance of the bridal party. First came the two ushers followed by Miss Estella Carter maid -of-honor (She lived next door to family home at 1530 Sturm Ave. Harold and Mary Sauer lived there in 1939-1940 until their home was built. Aunt Stella as she was called was a registered nurse) and then the bride, who walked alone. The bridegroom and his best man William Correll, of Charleroi, Pa., met the wedding party at the alter. The bride wore a handsome empire gown of white satin trimmed with hand embroidery chiffon and pearls. A long tulle, veil caught with a cornet of valley lilies completed the costume and she carried a bouquet of valley lilies and Bride’s roses. Miss Carter was attired in canary colored satin with a large picture hat. After the ceremony a wedding breakfast was given for the members of the bridal party and the relatives and close friends at the Gagen home 1123 South Street, Lafayette, Indiana. The house was beautifully decorated throughout, the color scheme being yellow and pink. The decorations for the bride’s table were most attractive. From the chandelier was suspended a large white floral wedding bell, and streamers of yellow ribbon reached the corners of the table. The centerpiece was a basket of Killarney and Bride’s roses. The other guests were served at small tables and covers were laid for forty. During the breakfast music was furnished by a trio composed of F.A. Hertwig, piano, Charles Reifers, violin, and Charles Loeb, cello. There were handsome gowns among the guests. Mrs. Gagen, mother of the bride, wore an exquisite cedar color imported silk, trimmed with bands of gold and silver. Mrs. J.P. Keefe (Emma: sister of the bride) wore her wedding dress of cameo pink chiffon broadcloth. Miss Greenen (Blanche) was attired in Niagara blue satin foulard, trimmed with gold and jet. Miss Sara Keefe’s (sister-in-law to Emma (Gagen) Keefe) costume was an electric blue satin trimmed in fringe and silk embroidery. Miss Theresa Keefe (sister-in-law to Emma (Gagen) Keefe) wore pink satin trimmed with gold trimmings. Mrs. Charles P. Greenen (Amelia (Dewenter) Greenen) was attired in blue satin. Mr. & Mrs. Greenen left in the afternoon for a wedding trip east and will visit Washington, D.C., and New York. On their return they will live in Indianapolis at 421 Walnut Street and will be at home to their friends after July 1. Mr. Greenen is connected with the Gill and Greenen firm of Indianapolis and is a prominent young businessman. He attended Purdue and Butler colleges and is a member of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity of the Butler chapter. The bride is one of Lafayette’s most popular and accomplished young women. She attended St. Mary-of-the-Woods at Terre Haute and is a graduate of St. Ignatius Academy of this city. The out-of-town guests were Mrs. Joseph W.Greenen and daughter Miss Blanche, Mr. & Mrs. Charles P. Greenen, Misses Sara and Theresa Keefe, Mr. & Mrs. Harry Drew, Rev. A.A.
