From a short bio on his son Otho

The Warren Republican
Warren County, Indiana
February 25, 1886

"OTHO MARTIN, a son of JAMES MARTIN, a former resident of Williamsport many long years ago, has returned to this place and has taken the position of fireman and engineer at the Phil. Nordurft tile factory. OTHO's father is well remembered by many of the older citizens of the place as the ferryman for several years at the foot of Main street. Those days when ferry boats were the only mode of crossing the Wabash are one, and live only in the memory of the older inhabitants, and with them have passed from the stage of action the men, having been ferried across the invisible stream by the boatman Time."

From information given on Emma Jones Martin's death certificate, I have wondered if the Martins were of German descent and came from the Altoona, PA, area.  The information on her death certificate was given by her son and the birthplaces he gave for her and her parent's was all wrong.  It stated that she was born in Altoona, Penn., when she was actually born in Tippecanoe County, Ind. and that her father was born in Germany, when he was actually born in Kanawha County, Virginia.  My theory from this information is that there is some grain of truth to this information, but that it should actually apply to the Martin side of the family and not the Jones.  My hunch is that the Martin's were of German extraction and that they came to Ohio from the Altoona, Pennsylvania area.  Another clue that they were of German ancestry is the name of their second son - Otho.  Any thoughts on this anyone?
James married Nancy ROLAND, daughter of William ROLAND? and Unknown, on 25 Feb 1834 in Miami Co., OH2. (Nancy ROLAND was born about 1814 in Pennsylvania1, died on 20 Feb 1877 in Warren Co., IN and was buried in Williamsport, Warren Co., IN3.)
Notes for Nancy Roland:

Nancy Roland Martin was buried in the Old Hillside Cemetery in Williamsport, Warren County, Indiana.  Buried next to her was Rachel Martin (d. Jan. 26, 1901, age 61y), wife of Otho Martin; Thomas J.C. Morris (d. Jan. 15, 1888, age 19y, 11m, 15d), son of Thos. and Rachel Morris (this appears to have been a son of Rachel Martin by her first marriage); and L. Jane Rowland (d. Nov. 3, 1852, age 14y, 27d, dau. of J. and J. J.).

Also buried in this cemetery were James Rowland (d. Nov. 15, 1853, age 36y, 10m, 22d, bro. of Nancy?); and Juliette J. Rowland, wife of James (d. Nov. 23, 1852, age 30y, 3m, 20d.)  (see notes on James Rowland below):

CLARA J. FULKS
Mrs. Clara J. Fulks, wife of Alexander S. Fulks, one of the best known women in West Lafayette, died at 11:50 o'clock yesterday morning at the family residence, 328 Salisbury street. Mrs. Fulks suffered an acute bilious attack yesterday morning after breakfast and had a severe pain in her head. A physician was called but he was compelled to leave the city soon after he prescribed for her. About 11 o'clock Mrs. Fulks became unconscious and another physician was called, but heart failure had followed the bilious attack and she died in a short time, without regaining consciousness. Her death was entirely unexpected and was a great shock to her family and friends.

Mrs. Fulks was the former Miss Clara J. Martin and was born near Dayton, in this county, on January 26, 1846. She was married to Mr. Fulks in 1868 and they lived at Wolcott for some time, coming from there to West Lafayette.
