Apprentice Indenture
Julian Snelling to Samuel Favorite

Tippecanoe County, Indiana


This Indenture made this second day of July Eighteen hundred and thirty five between JOSEPH BARTON and FRANCIS STROTHER Overseers of the Poor of Sheffield Township in the County of Tippecanooe and State of Indiana of the one part and SAMUEL FAVORITE of the county aforesaid fo the other part.  Witnesseth that the said Overseers have put placed and bound and do by these presents put, place and bind JULIAN SNELLING a poor girl aged fifteen years as an apprentice to the said SAML FAVORITE to be taught the art of Housewifery and to live with and serve him the said SAML FAVORITE as an apprentice for the term of three years from this date that is to say until she the said JULIAN SNELLING shall arrive to the age of eighteen years, if the said SAML FAVORITE shall so long live.  And the said Overseers do by these presents give unto the said SAML FAVORITE all the right power and authority over the said JULIAN SNELLING and her service during the said term which by the laws of this state a master has in and over a lawfully indentured apprentice.  And the said SAML FAVORITE in consideration thereof doth on his part covenant promise and agree to and with the said Overseers and their successors in office and each and every of them and with the said JULIAN SNELLING that he will teach and instruct or cause to be well and sufficiently taught and instructed in the art trade and occupation of housewifery after the best way and manner that he can; and also to cause her to be instructed six months in common day schools and train her to habits of industry and morality and during the term of her apprenticeship to provide and allow to her sufficient meat, drink, washing, lodging, and apparel and all other things necessary for an apprentice during her said term of apprenticeship.  And the said SAML FAVORITE further covenants and agrees to furnish and give to the said apprentice at the expiration of her aforesaid term of service a new silk dress and other corresponding clothing.  In witness whereof the said parties have hereunto set their hands and seals this day and year above written.
