Feb the 20th 1899
Dear Nephew & Niece,
I will let you know that your welcom picturs and letter was Rec last Satur the 18th and was so glad to have from you and those lovely picturs I thought that it could not be posiable that I could not talk with them. they are so lovely and natural. the Relative are all well now but Every boddy has bin down with the Grip. I have never Knowen so much Sickness in this Neighborhood as has bin in the last two months. mostly Grip and very fatal. theare has bin a grate maney deaths but mostly aged people. I Rec - a letter last Saturday from Va Stating that one of your Pas first cousins died the 3rd of this month, aged 78 years and 14 days, Mrs. Elizabeth Whitesel, daughter of uncle John Shank
I say to you that we have had the coldest winter I ever have Seen here especialy the first part of this month. Oh it was cold. on the 8th it was 10 below zero, on the 9th it was 16 below, on the 10th 12 below, on the 11th Just to zero, on the 12th 15 below, on the 13th 10 below. So you see that we had zero weather for Several days but we had but little Snow this winter so fare - the wheat crop will be badly ingered on the acount of the hard freezeing and little snow - I am just getting over a sever spell of grip. I taken it a week ago last Saturday but I am able to be up now but I am very weake and feble. I am all a lone this evening. Bruce went about 5 miles this morning to bale hay and wont be at home til tomorow evening and Netta, his wife, went to her fathers to waite on them. father and mother boath down sick and all a lone - I sent your father - a Terre Haute Paper and I have not heard wheather it comes all right or not. If you know aney thing about it Please let me know in your next letter - if you See aney of the boys or aney of Nesters Please find out wheather he gets the paper or not - as your Pa wont write to me. if he would write to me I would gladly answer his letters I will send you our familey group of picturs. I will give you their names. the man Standing is Charley Shirley, the woman at his left is his wife Ella, the little boy is their son, the girl behind me is Emma my daughter, and the man sitting is Levi Bruce Shank my son, Ella is the oldest also my daughter, the little boys name is Oran. Please let me know wheather those picturs are Rec all right or not let me heare from you as soon as they are Rec - as it is getting late and bed time I close hoping to heare from you very Soon
