Roy Brenton, 54 years old, died at his
residence 1524 Wilson Street at 11 oclock Tuesday morning. He is survived by the
wife, Stella; six sons, Robert, Charles, Donald, David, and Frank, all of Terre Haute, and
William, United States Army stationed in Germany; two daughters, Mrs. Mildred Howard and
Mrs. Marie Sims, both of Terre Haute; two brothers, Curtis, Bloomington, Ind., and Melvin,
Terre Haute; one sister, Mrs. Mabel Brock, Terre Haute. He was a member of the Terre Haute
Brewery Workers Union. The body was taken to the Gillis Memory Chapel.

Walter Brenton, 64, Bloomingdale, who was found dead in his car about
one-half mile east of the entrance to Turkey Run State Park along State Road 47 Friday

Mrs. Stella E. Brenton, 63, died at 5:30
oclock Wednesday morning at the residence 1411 South Eleventh and One-half Street.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Marian Sims and Mrs. Mildred Howard, both of Terre
Haute; six sons, David, Donald, Charles, and Robert Brenton, all of Terre Haute; Frank,
stationed at Ft Leonard Wood, Mo., and William Brenton, Ft. Wayne, Ind.; three sisters,
Mrs. Emma Cartwright, Terre Haute, Mrs. Sadie Booth, West Terre Haute, and Mrs. Laura
Sartwell, of Indianapolis; four brothers, William Taylor of Terre Haute, and Herbert,
Charles, and Roy Taylor, all of Indianapolis; 14 grandchildren and several neices and
nephews. She was a member of the Church of Christ at Fourteenth Street and Fifth Avenue.
The body was taken to the Gillis Memory Chapel.

CIVIL WAR VETERAN DIED THURSDAY NIGHT
J.J. Chapman Was One of the Best Known G.A.R
Veterans in the City. J.J. Chapman, aged 66 years, died at his home, 127 North Third
Street, Thursday night of lagrippe of the bowels. He was born at Philadelphia in 1833, and
served three years in the Civil war. He was in the Twenty-second Kansas Cavalry, under
McCloude. Mr. Chapman leaves a wife and two children, Mrs. Ida Waltman of Evansville and
Miss May Bird Chapman of Terre Haute. He also leaves a brother, Charles Chapman of Mount
Carmel, Ill. Mr. Chapman was one of the best known GAR veterans in the city, and during
the last campaign was in charge of the Republican headquarters on south Fifth street.

Mrs. Frances Dunning Conover, 39 years old
1920 north eighth street died at 4:15 o'clock Thursday afternoon at her home. Surviving
are the husband Howard: three sisters , Mrs.F.E. Hutchens of Temple, Texas , Mrs. Clifford
Anderson of Indianapolis and Mrs. Ray Secrest of Terre Haute and two bothers John and
Bernard Dunning, both of Terre Haute. An employe of the Bledsoe Coal Company for the last
six years, she was a member of the Sacred Heart Church. Services will be at 8:30 o'clock
Monday morning at the Callahan Funeral Homes. Requiem mass will follow at 9 o'clock at the
Sacred Heart Church . Burial will be in Calvary cemetery. Friends may call after 3 o'clock
Saturday afternoon .

Johnson B. Dildine, 67 years old, died at 4
oclock Wednesday afternoon at his home, nine miles east of Terre Haute, following a
long illness with paralysis. Mr. Dildine was born in that vicinity and had spent his
entire life there. He is survived by the wife, Mrs. Mary Dildine; two daughters, and one
son; also three sisters and three brothers. Arrangements for the funeral have not been
made.

grandchildren. Short funeral services will be held at the residence at 1 oclock
Sunday afternoon, with continued services at the Oak Hill Church at 2 oclock. Burial

at 3:57 a.m. Monday, September 13, 1993 in St. Vincent's Hospital at Indianapolis. He was
Vice President of Wabash Valley Asphalt Company, Inc. He was born March 22, 1922, in Terre
Haute to John F. KELLY and Katharine WALSH KELLY. Survivors include his wife, Helen Jane
RASSELL KELLY, one son, Michael of Danville; five daughters, Molly ELLINGSWORTH of West
Terre Haute, Jane FULLER of Freeport, Maine, Susan GERRITY of Grand Rapids, Mich., Betsey
HOEY of Marchfield, Mass., and Mary REPIC of Flint, Mich.; four brothers, James M. and
Thomas L. of Terre Haute, Joseph P. of Saginaw, Mich., and William R. of Southern Pines,
N.C.; 18 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He was a

Aged Resident Is Called By Death
Willard KIDDER, for Many Years Prominent In
Citys Business Circles, Dies Willard Kidder, one of the oldest residents of the city
and for many years active in local business circles, died Tuesday afternoon at the
residence, 456 North Center Street. Mr. Kidder had been ill for several weeks and his
death at this time was not unexpected by the family and friends. He was 93 years old and
had lived in Terre Haute for more than fifty years.
Mr. Kidder was one of the pioneers in the milling industry here and was the founder of the
large flour mill at the east end of the Wabash river bridge, now operated by the Sparks
Milling company. He was at one time president of the Terre Haute Street Railway company
and was at the head of the company when its lines were changed from horse drawn to
electric service. At the time of his death he was president of the Kester Electric company
and had been associated in many other enterprises with prominent men of the city. He was a
member of the First Congregational church. The decedent was a native of Vermont and came
west with his family when about 21 years of age. The family first located in Illinois and
after several years residence there removed to Terre Haute. In 1869 he was married
to Louise Kendall of Jamaica, Vt. Mrs. Kidder died in 1922. Surviving him of his immediate
family are one sister, Mrs. L.P. Alden; two daughters, Mrs. Cora K. Wood and Miss Idelle
Kidder, all of Terre Haute; three sons, Ned S. of Minneapolis, Arthur D. of Washington,
D.C., and Sidney J. Kidder of Mogollon, N.M.; 11 grandchildren and four
great-grandchildren. One son, Marcus W. Kidder, died in 1908, and another, Clinton B.,
died in 1920. Funeral services will be held at 9:30 oclock Friday morning at the
residence. Interment will be private.

Raymond Harold MATHEWS, 75 of South Bend,
Indiana, formerly of the Terre Haute/Sullivan Indiana area, passed away after an extended
illness at 11:50 p.m. Thursday, October 10, 2002 in his South Bend Indiana residence with
his wife and children by his side.
Mr. Mathews was born June 08, 1927 in Medford, Wisconsin to Claude MATHEWS and Ida Mae
CLARKSON, who have preceded him in death.
On December 29, 1950 in Terre Haute, Indiana, he married the former Rebecca A. SMITH, who
survives. He is also survived by three daughters, Pamela MATHEWS - (David) SMITH, of
Nashville Tn., Penny G. MATHEWS and Paula J. MATHEWS, both of South Bend. He is
survived by four sons, Stephen (Victoria) MATHEWS, Stanley (Pamela) MATHEWS, Timothy
(Sherry) MATHEWS, also of South Bend and Randy (Rochelle) MATHEWS of Plymouth, Indiana.
Also surviving are 17 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
Four brothers also survive, Clifford MATHEWS of Benson Arizona, Earl MATHEWS of Cochise
Arizona, Ronnie MATHEWS of Tucson Arizona and Gerald W. MATHEWS of Las Vegas, Nevada; and
a son-in-law, James A. SPENCE of Nashville, Tennessee.
Mr. MATHEWS was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Nicole M. MATHEWS in 1985.
Mr. MATHEWS retired after many years of service from the former
Lee-Way Trucking Company. He was a veteran serving during World War II.
Services are October 13, 2002 in the Hanley & Sons Funeral Home, with Rev. Andy Taylor
officiating. Burial to follow at Southlawn Cemetery, South Bend, Indiana.

Henry A. Shoemaker, age 80 years, one of
Vigo County's oldest native residents died Sunday (8 Feb 1903) at the home of his
daughter, Mrs. Louis Kuhlman, 122 South Fourteenth Street.
Mr. Shoemaker was born May 18, 1827, and lived in this county all his life with the
exception of six years spent in Kansas. For the past five years he made his home with his
daughter Mrs. Kuhlman. Mr. Shoemaker was a member of the One Hundred and Thirty Third and
the One Hundred and Fifty-sixth Indiana Regiments during the Civil War. HE was a member of
J. J. Burgs Post No. 494 G.A.R. He joined the First Baptist church at Middleton IN in
1860.
Mr. Shoemaker was married to Miss Ester Hunt in 1846. Five boys and five girls were born
to them, Seven survive. They are Simon E. of Monet MO; Robert T. of Joliette IL; A. Wakely
of this county, and Mrs. Charles N. Keaton, Mrs. Q.A. Hunt, Mrs. Louis Kuhlman and Mrs. C.
R. Hubble, all of this city. Mrs. Shoemaker died in 1880 and Mr. Shoemaker was married to
Jane Myers, of this union one son survives, Perley Shoemaker of Middletown IN. Mr.
Shoemaker leaves eighteen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren also one brother
Joseph Shoemaker of Seelyville, IN.
The funeral will be held at ten o'clock Tuesday morning from his late resience. Rev. C. E.
Herman, of this city, will conduct the services here and Rev. George Fuson, of Middletown,
will have charge of the service at that place where Mr. Shoemaker will be buried.

Mrs. Elizabeth SLOUGH, aged
60 years, died at her home, five miles east of here, Monday morning after a lingering
illness. She is survived by three daughters and four sons, Mrs. Emma BECK [BOCK?], of
Pawnee, Kan., Mrs. Minnie MESSICK, of Strafford, Mo., and Mrs. Walter LEONARD, of this
place, William SLOUGH, of Jasonville, and Richard, Albert, and Alfred, of Terra Haute. The

Elizabeth WALL was born August 3, 1854, and departed this life August 2, 1915. Had she
lived but one more day she would have been sixty one years old. She was united in marriage
to Adam SLOUGH, April 16, 1874, and to this union eight children were born, three
daughters and five sons, all whom survive. Mrs. SLOUGH has been in failing health for the
past few years and has been the constant recipient of tender care from the hands of her
immediate relatives and friends. A few months ago she made an open confession of her
inward faith in Christ, and obeyed the Lord in christian baptism and became a member of
the church of the United Brethern in Christ. She expressed an earnest desire that her
loved ones might embrace the Christian religion. She leaves five sons, three daughters, a
number of other relatives and a large circle of friends to mourn her departure.

Haute, died at 4:53 p.m. Sunday in Union Hospital. He was a retired farmer and
warehouseman. He was born September 14, 1893 in Fayette County, Illinois to Clark
SMITH and Almeda EVANS SMITH. His wife, Madge Ruth RODGERS SMITH, died in 1984.
Survivors include three daughters, Rosemary DAVIDSON and Ruth Ellen MURDEN both of West
Terre Haute, and Caryl OKAMOTO of Highland; one foster son, James JENKINS of Clinton; a
half-brother, Theodore CLENDENEN of Decature, Ill, 16 grandchildren; 20
great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. He
was a member of Bethesda United methodist Church and the Farm Bureau Co-op. Services
are 11 a.m. Wednesday in Bedino Chapel of the Valley in West Terre Haute. Burial is
in Bethesda Cemetery. Visitation is 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

in 1893. She was a member of Second Congregational church and was active in the
womens society of the church and in various religious and charitable enterprises.Her
husband, Willard A. Stapleton, who was associated with The late Fred Shoudy in forming The
Rockford Wholesale Grocery Company, died July 6, 1933.Surviving are two sons, Donald P.
and Felix, both of Washington, D. C.Felix Stapleton, who arrived In Rockford last night,
is an engineer in the office of production management.

Grover C. CREAGER, 76, died at his home in
Dugger at 5:30 p.m. Saturday. He is survived by his wife Ollie; one son Lester W. of
Koleen, Ind. one brother Frank, of Sullivan; one sister Mrs. Kate MCCLELLAN of Sullivan
and two grandchildren. The body was taken to the Newkirk Funeral Home in Dugger where
arrangements are pending.

Mrs. Pearl HAYHURST, 75 years old, of
Prairie Creek, died at the Mary Sherman Hospital in Sullivan at 8:30 o'clock Friday
evening. Surviving are two grandsons, Richard and Clifford HAYHURST, both of RR 2,
Farmersburg. She was a member of the Prairie Creek Church of Christ. The body
was taken to the DeBaun Funeral Home in Prairie Creek where friends may call after noon
Sunday. Funeral service will be held at the Prairie Creek Church of Christ at 1:00
PM Monday with Huston HOLLIS officiating. Burial will be in the Prairie Creek West Lawn
Cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour prior to the services.

W. SCOTT FORNEY, a leading educator and school administrator of the state, died
unexpectedly at St. Anthony Hospital at 8:35 o'clock Saturday night. Mr. Forney was
stricken with a heart attack at the family residence, 1513 South Eighth Street, and was
removed to the hospital at 7:50 o'clock.
Had he lived until October 03 Mr. Forney would have celebrated his seventieth birthday.
Principal of Wiley High School from 1927, Mr. Forney retired from the teaching profession
in June, 1950. His sudden death last night from a heart attack was a shock to all
those with whom he had been associated.
During the 23 years he served as principal of Wiley, he was held in affection by thousands
of the student body because of his sound advice in problems of the young, and his counsel
in the administrative affairs of the school system here was highly respected.
He was a member of the Methodist Temple, Seventh and Poplar streets, where for many years
he taught an adult Sunday School class. He was a member of the Rotary Club, having
at one time served the civic organization as president.
His teaching experience was varied and his career took him and Mrs. Forney, the former INA
GURTNER to the Philippine Islands in 1908 where both held teaching posts for three years.
Mr. Forney graduated from Indiana University with a Bachelor of Science Degree and held a
Master's Degree from Columbia University of New York.
Mr. Foreny was born in the rural area of Franklin County, at Ashley, Indiana and following
completion of his education he taught in the schools there.
He served as superintendent of schools in Ashley for four years and held a similar
position for four years each at Butler and Waterloo, both in Indiana, prior to going
abroad. He came to Wiley from a school superintendency at Alexandria, Indiana.
Besides the widow, he is survived by three sons, Dr. ROBERT FORNEY of Indianapolis, PAUL
FORNEY of Evansville and RALPH FORNEY of Terre Haute. The body was taken to the H.
P. Martin Funeral Home where friends may call after 5 o'clock Sunday evening.
