SHOEMAKER, HENRY A.,
age 80 years, one of Vigo County's oldest native residents died Sunday (8 Feb 1903) at the
home of his daughter, Mrs. Louis Kuhlman, 122 South Fourteenth Street.
Mr. Shoemaker was born May 18, 1827, and lived in this county all his life with the
exception of six years spent in Kansas. For the past five years he made his home with his
daughter Mrs. Kuhlman. Mr. Shoemaker was a member of the One Hundred and Thirty Third and
the One Hundred and Fifty-sixth Indiana Regiments during the Civil War. HE was a member of
J. J. Burgs Post No. 494 G.A.R. He joined the First Baptist church at Middleton IN in
1860.
Mr. Shoemaker was married to Miss Ester Hunt in 1846. Five boys and five girls were born
to them, Seven survive. They are Simon E. of Monet MO; Robert T. of Joliette IL; A. Wakely
of this county, and Mrs. Charles N. Keaton, Mrs. Q.A. Hunt, Mrs. Louis Kuhlman and Mrs. C.
R. Hubble, all of this city. Mrs. Shoemaker died in 1880 and Mr. Shoemaker was married to
Jane Myers, of this union one son survives, Perley Shoemaker of Middletown IN. Mr.
Shoemaker leaves eighteen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren also one brother
Joseph Shoemaker of Seelyville, IN.
The funeral will be held at ten o'clock Tuesday morning from his late resience. Rev. C. E.
Herman, of this city, will conduct the services here and Rev. George Fuson, of Middletown,
will have charge of the service at that place where Mr. Shoemaker will be buried.

SIMONS, DELBERT H.
Services for Delbert H. SIMONS, 68, who was found dead Thursday at the
residence, 412 South Fourth street, will be held at the Martin Tearman Funeral Homes at
11:15 o'clock Sunday morning. The Rev. Ralph Jones will officiate. Burial will be at 3
o'clock Sunday afternoon in Enfield, Ill. Friends may call after 10:30 o'clock Saturday
morning.

MRS. MARY C. , 76 years old, died at 8:30 o'clock Friday night at St. Anthony's
hospital, where she had been removed from the residence, 1021 North Eighth street. The
funeral will be held from the home of A. J. Drought, 835 North Eighth street. She is
survived by one brother, Terrence Curley, of Brooklyn, N. Y.

Coal City, Ind., Aug. 3.
Mrs. Elizabeth SLOUGH, aged 60 years, died at her home, five miles east of here,
Monday morning after a lingering illness. She is survived by three daughters and four
sons, Mrs. Emma BECK [BOCK?], of Pawnee, Kan., Mrs. Minnie MESSICK, of Strafford, Mo., and
Mrs. Walter LEONARD, of this place, William SLOUGH, of Jasonville, and Richard, Albert,
and Alfred, of Terra Haute. The funeral will be held at the residence. Owen County
Democrat - 19 Aug 1915 - Obituary Elizabeth WALL was born August 3, 1854, and departed
this life August 2, 1915. Had she lived but one more day she would have been sixty one
years old. She was united in marriage to Adam SLOUGH, April 16, 1874, and to this union
eight children were born, three daughters and five sons, all whom survive. Mrs. SLOUGH has
been in failing health for the past few years and has been the constant recipient of
tender care from the hands of her immediate relatives and friends. A few months ago she
made an open confession of her inward faith in Christ, and obeyed the Lord in christian
baptism and became a member of the church of the United Brethern in Christ. She expressed
an earnest desire that her loved ones might embrace the Christian religion. She leaves
five sons, three daughters, a number of other relatives and a large circle of friends to
mourn her departure.

SLOUGH, MRS. HARRIET
The funeral of Mrs. Harriet SLOUGH, 69 years old, who died Monday evening
at 6:45 o'clock at the residence, 2244 Second Avenue, will be held Wednesday afternoon at
1 o'clock with interment in Highland Lawn cemetery. The deceased is survived by three

CARL MASON was born February 24, 1918 in Vigo County, Indiana and died
April 27, 1961 in Terre Haute, Indiana.
He was the son of Ralph Smith and Mary Magnolia All-Smith who have preceeded him in death.
Survivors include his wife of 27 years, Mary Catherine FINTON to whom he was married since
November 29, 1945.
Also surviving is a daughter, Carla Marie Smith and a son, John Ralph Smith.
Other survivors include his brother Daniel Smith and sisters, Anna M. Smith; Helen
(William)POFF and Rebecca A.(Raymond) MATHEWS.
A brother James "Buzz" Smith preceeded him in death on January 03, 1951 and
another brother, Earl C. Smith preceeded him in death on June 18, 1960 in Tucson.
Burial is at Roselawn Cemetery, Vigo County, Indiana

DANIEL WEBSTER born 01-05-1927 in Terre Haute, Indiana, died April 26, 1965
at Terre Haute, Indiana. He was the son of Ralph Smith and Mary Magnolia ALL - Smith. On
April 23, 1948 in Terre Haute, he married Nina Rosemary NOWTARS.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by children Donald L. Smith; Bruce A. Smith; Carol
D. Smith and Susan L. Smith.
He is survived by sisters, Anna M. Smith; Helen M. POFF (William); and Rebecca A. MATHEWS
(Raymond). His brothers, Carl M. Smith; James "Buzz" Smith and Earl C. Smith
have preceeded him in death.
Burial is at Terre Haute, Indiana.

EARL CLARENCE was born 07-26-1924 in Vigo County, Indiana to the union of
Ralph SMITH and Mary Magnolia ALL-Smith. He died June 18, 1960 in Phoenix, Arizona after
having moved to there from South Bend, Indiana in 1959 for health reasons.
On December 20, 1947 in Terre Haute, he married Mildred A. PEASE who survives him In
addition to his wife Mildred he is survived by children Michael Joseph Smith; Frances
Smith and Earl Smith, Jr.
He is survived by brothers Carl M. Smith of Terre Haute; Daniel Smith of Terre Haute;
sisters Anna Smith; and Helen M. (William) POFF of Terre Haute and sister Rebecca A.
(Raymond) MATHEWS of Tucson, Arizona.
Burial is at Evergreen Cemetery in Tucson, Arizona.

JAMES BYRON, born 1854, died at Union Hospital, Terre Haute, Indiana December
1928. Cause of death was Lobar Pneumonia. Graveside services are January 04, 1929 at
Highland Lawn Cemetery Section 9 Block E Grave 46/47, Vigo County, Terre Haute, Indiana.
Survivors include his wife, Anna Reeves ATTMORE to whom he was married since October 26,
1876. Also surviving are two sons, Carl SMITH and Ralph SMITH. A daughter, Mae SMITH,
preceeded him in death in 1877.

SMITH, LEE ROY,
96, of Route 15, West Terre Haute, died at 4:53 p.m. Sunday in Union Hospital. He
was a retired farmer and warehouseman. He was born September 14, 1893 in Fayette
County, Illinois to Clark SMITH and Almeda EVANS SMITH. His wife, Madge Ruth RODGERS
SMITH, died in 1984. Survivors include three daughters, Rosemary DAVIDSON and Ruth
Ellen MURDEN both of West Terre Haute, and Caryl OKAMOTO of Highland; one foster son,
James JENKINS of Clinton; a half-brother, Theodore CLENDENEN of Decature, Ill, 16
grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and several nieces and
nephews. He was a member of Bethesda United methodist Church and the Farm Bureau
Co-op. Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday in Bedino Chapel of the Valley in West Terre
Haute. Burial is in Bethesda Cemetery. Visitation is 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

STAPLETON, MRS. KATE PURDY
Funeral services for Mrs. Kate Purdy Stapleton, 81, 1731 National Avenue,
who died at 6 p.m. Sunday at Rockford hospital, will be Held at 2 p. m. today at the
Burpee-Wood funeral home, 420 North Main Street. Dr. John Gordon, pastor of Second
Congregational Church, will Officiate and burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Mrs.
Stapleton was born Oct 27, 1860, in Terre Haute, In; and came to Rockford in 1893. She was
a member of Second Congregational church and was active in the womens society of the
church and in various religious and charitable enterprises.Her husband, Willard A.
Stapleton, who was associated with The late Fred Shoudy in forming The Rockford Wholesale
Grocery Company, died July 6, 1933.Surviving are two sons, Donald P. and Felix, both of
Washington, D. C.Felix Stapleton, who arrived In Rockford last night, is an engineer in
the office of production management.
