DRAKE
Submitted by Carol Stultz June 9, 1997
John Drake was born in Cass Co, IN, c1837 and he served in the Ohio Volunteers in the
Civil War. He married Corintha Chapman at Paulding Co, OH. His Civil War records state he
was born in Cass County? However, through a cousin, he said he saw a genealogy which says
John Drake was descended from Nathaniel & Rhoda (Brittain) Drake of Sharon, MA. Lots
of info found on this couple giving names of their children, etc. I found a Preston G.
Drake that married a Nancy Ferguson in 1833, Vigo County, IN. Then in 1842, Preston G.
Drake married a Susan Bryant in Vigo. Is this John Drake's parents? Corintha and John
divorced and she re-married as did John. John Drake died in Union Co, IL. Corintha moved
to the Vigo County area after his death and she was no longer married to her second
husband, after 1880. I have always felt that the reason for her move was possibly an
inheritance left by Drake. She worked for the county home in the 1880 and 90s. Are there
any employment records available? If anyone can help, please contact me and Thank you !
DRAKE
Carol Stultz, C. G. June 12, 1997
I just recently learned of a marriage in Vigo Co, IN of Preston G. Drake to Nancy Ferguson
in 1833. Our family researcher have been trying to prove the parentage of John Drake that
was born c1836/7, his Civil War records states, "Cass County, IN, place of
birth". No Drakes' there in 1840 or 1850. John Drake md Corintha Chapman at Paulding
Co, Ohio in 1863 and it was a rocky marriage, and after five births with 3 surviving
children, Corintha divorced John in the early 1870s. John moved on and married a Nancy,
(per Civil War record); and died in 1879 at Union Co, MO. Corintha come to Vigo and later
Vermillion Co, IN after the 1880 census. She had married a Wm Ellis but he is no longer
with her in 1880. She has a son, Preston Ellis born, however and she works at the Poor
farm in Terre Haute. I feel this Preston Drake may be John's father and Nancy Ferguson,
his mother. Can anyone working the Ferguson or the Drake lines help me!!! Thanks.
