STOVER
Submitted by Keith Johnson 24 Jun 2005
I reside in Northeast Tennessee and I am conducting some research for
publication. I may be embarking on a search that can truly be regarded as the proverbial
"needle in a haystack." Let me briefly offer some background and then conclude
with the information I'm seeking from in Vermillion County.
Daniel STOVER (1775-1849) settled in what is now Carter County, Tennessee about 1790.
Daniel's second wife was Antionette WILLIAMS. After Daniel died and Antionette had a
failed marriage to a HARDEN/HARDIN and moved to Vermillion County, Indiana in the late
1870s or early 1880s and died sometime during the 1880s. She is believed to be buried
there. Antionette likely took the Stover Family Bible with her. Because Daniel Stover had
at least 16 children with both of his wives, the Bible is an important source of family
information for local descendents and people across the country.
Daniel & Antionette had a daughter by the name of Margaret (Stover) who married James
Alvin DUGGER. Many believe it was Margaret who Antionette followed to Indiana. So in the
1870s or early 1880s these three people should begin to show up in records of Vermillion
County.
A descendent of Margaret, Ms. Pamela Thomas Steinlein of Washington, DC, corresponded in
1963 (no, not a typographical error & she has likely since passed) with a local man
named with whom I am well-acquainted. The man is the foremost local historian and
professional genealogists and his research and personal library of nearly 60 years of
research is impressive and reliable. Ms. Steinlein stated in her letter to this gentleman
that the Daniel Stover Family Bible existed and she provided some persuasive abstracts
from it.
I AM TRYING TO LOCATE THE STOVER FAMILY BIBLE that would have likely fell into the hands
of a "Dugger" descendent..
Can anyone confirm James Alvin & Margaret Stover DUGGER were in Vermillion County
beginning in the 1880s?
Can anyone confirm if Antionette WILLIAMS is buried in Vermillion County? Can anyone
inform me about the known descendants of James Alvin & Margaret Stover DUGGER? I would
like to try to follow the descendents and contact any living about the Bible if it doesn't
exist in some local historical collection.
I would be happy to promptly reimburse anyone for any copying costs, postage, etc. Thank
you for your time and if anyone can assist me, I would be grateful. Any possible leads I
could work would be welcomed.
