Unknown Photos
Submitted by Martha Class
As I mentioned before my name is Martha Class and I found these photos last summer in the possession of my aunt & uncle who live in Terre Haute. Let me tell you what I do know about this photos. The 3 large oval photos I think were taken either in the late 1800's or early 1900's. Out of that group one of those photos had the name of John Brackall listed on the back. I think the other oval photo of the young man may be another photo of John Brackall or it maybe one of his siblings because the photos were found together along with the other oval photo with the 2 women. I think the 2 women are probably sisters. I think they might be Vanlandinghams, because of the full faced girl on the right.
The smaller photos I found in the photo album that I believe belonged to either my great-grandmother, Lillian Opal Brackall or her older sister Hazel. These photos were taken in the 1920's, probably between 1920 and 1925 or 1926. When I looked through this album last year, I remembered that I had seen it before and at that time it was in my grandmother, Charlotte Walker Vanlandingham's possession. She was the executor for her Aunt Hazel's will. Aunt Hazel died in the 1970's. Opal was my grandmother's mother. Many of the photos in that album I recognized as being photos of my great-great grandmother, Charlotte Tina (Followell) Brackall and my grandmother as a baby with her parents and she was born in 1922. I know from my family tree research that in the 1920 cenus, gr-grandmother Opal was living with her sister Hazel, who was listed as the head of the household and there were relatives named Carrico that were living with them. In 1920 Opal & Hazel lived at : 334 (could be 339) No. 12th St. in Terre Haute, IN.
Even though they weren't listed in the 1920 census, I believe that my gr-gr-grandmother Tina, my gr-Uncle William Brackall (Tina's son, Opal & Hazel's older brother), his son Howard Brackall and Hazel's daughter Helen Marie Brackall were all living together in the same home. That is because when Opal got married in July, 1920 she listed the same address on her marriage application as was listed on the census for herself, her mother, and her husband to be. William was living at that address in 1917 when he filled out his WWI Draft Registration card. So I believe that the people in the smaller photos are perhaps Carricos, other Brackalls, or Followells or they may even be Foxes. Tina was married to Lafayette Powell before she was married to Charles Brackall and they had a child named Grace who married George Fox in 1904 and they had 3 daughters-Mildred, Marjorie & Dorothy Jean. By the 1930 census, Tina, William, Howard, Opal, my grandmother Charlotte, & Tina's other daughter Huldah Brackall Golden were all living in a boarding house, so it's also possible that some of these photos were taken in the late 1920's during the time they were living in the boarding house which was located on No. 5th St. I believe.
Here is some additional family history that I think supports my theories about who some of these people might be in the photos that I just sent you.
During the course of my research into the lineage of my maternal gr-gr-grandfather Charles Brackall, my maternal grandmother's mother's father's line, I have run across another family of Brackalls living in West Terre Haute around the same time that Charles & his family were living in Terre Haute. The father of this family is Lewis Henry Brackall & I think he may be the younger brother of Charles or some how related to him. Lewis Brackall married a woman named Adaline Vanscoyk in February, 1877 in Edgar, IL, she was known as Addie. Lewis & Addie can be found in the 1880 IL census with 2 of their 6 children-John W. and Charles-who aka-Charley. Lewis & Addie can be found living in Vigo Co. by 1900. These are the names of their children-John W.-b.1877, Charles-b.1879, Isabelle (aka-Belle)-b.1883, Noah-b.1887, Lillian (aka-Lily)b.1891 & Julia (aka-July)b. 1895. I think the photo that I have that was identified as John Brackall is John W. Brackall who was the son of Lewis & Addie. John would have been 23 by 1900. Now the other photo I sent you of the young man, who I said might also be John Brackall, or maybe a sibling, well I think that sibling might be Charles Brackall, son of Lewis & Addie. Charley Brackall would have been 21 in 1900, I believe he served in the Spanish-American War.
The 2 young women in the big oval photo are either the sisters of John W. & Charley Brackall-perhaps they are Lily & July or Belle & Lily. Per the obits for Charles & John, Lily, July & Belle are living in OK by the 1940's. So I think they were close.
The other choice for who those young women could be is my gr-grandfather, Samuel Vanlandingham, had 2 younger sisters-Grace and Chloa (Cloa) that were born in 1875 & 1886, respectively. By 1900, Grace would have been 25 and Chloa would have been 14.
By 1920, Tina Brackall's granddaughters, Mildred & Marjorie Fox were around 10 & 12, I think, those girls in the small photos that look like sisters could be Mildred & Marjorie Fox.
I hope somebody recognizes these photos. When my cousin, Teri Brackall, and I went through all those photos last year, she didn't recognize them either and neither did my aunt who is married to my mother's brother Larry. So far no one connected to the Johnson-Pitts families recognized those photos either.
